They helicopter " Life-flight'd " him !!
There must be more to this story, cause many of us have been hit hard. Fill the outboard's hot water trickle in a mask case and put the heat on it for 30-45 mins. I took a bad hit yesterday in the leg, but today feel 90% better with the quick heat. It's just part of spearing and gotta suck it up.

Kinda sounds like he got stung, and got into trouble ascending too quickly, got bent.

But I wonder if the stress of getting stung hard could influence one's risk of the bends?

John, are there any effective heat generating packages that can be used if you are not on an outboard boat with hot water available? Tony

Sting Hotshotz Packs from MAKO Spearguns

As more divers are hunting Lionfish, more divers are being stung.

MAKO Spearguns has teamed up with the reusable heat pack maker, "Hotshotz" to provide the best reusable heat packs for Lionfish stings.

Lionfish venom is made up of proteins that are denatured by applying heat. Applying heat to the affected area serves to help inactivate the venom and reduces the potential for it to spread into the bloodstream. It will also reduce the associated pain and swelling from the sting. This is why it is so important to have a heat source immediately available to the victim; the faster you can apply heat, the less damage (and pain) will occur..

Experts suggest removing any visible spines that may have broken off in the skin and applying heat (100 to 114 degrees F) to the affected area for approximately 30 minutes.

NOTE: Completely reusable, these Hotshotz heat packs lasts about an hour. After using, simply boil in water for 10 to 20 minutes and it is again ready for use. Can be used hundreds of times.

A wet towel can be heated up by setting it on the engine if you have access to that. If you have two towels then you can rotate them out as you use them.

I use a slightly bigger one than Dano's called HotSnapz green. Both are great at putting heat on the sting quick, and they are easily re-usable. I also find that you want to put as much pressure on the heat pod to make it more effective in the temperature transfer. If I'm stung in the hand I'll put the heat pod on top of the sting and then sit on my hand under my thigh.

I like the wet towel on the engine idea too!!
