Atomic Aquatics Cobalt

I recently picked up an atomic cobalt dive computer http://www.atomicaquatics.com/computer.html. The display is breath taking, and within seconds of picking up the computer I was able to work it perfectly. I am currently diving with the ATOM 2.0 dive wireless dive computer/watch and any familiar with it is not the most user friendly... I wanted to know if anyone had been diving with the cobalt computer and could tell me more as an owner/user. I am very impressed by the computer but would love to know more! If it is worth forking out the $1200 or there are better options out there.. I'm hoping to start diving on steel 100+'s with a 19... Any input would be great

Cheers!

join a tech forum to get a thorough rundown on the use of computers in tech diving. The usefulness of most recreational computers is questionable at best for anything past 120'.The depths and times you plan to dive play a large role in determining suitability.

Thanks for the input, do you have any technical diving forums you could suggest / have been on? I'm looking to start diving 150-175ft once my new setup is ready

Not bustin your chops, but have gotten 150 to 175 training? You got questions best asked of instructor for those depths. If you have not been trained, I urge you to not buy anything till you get a shopping list from the person responsible for you at those depths, it will save you time and money in the long run.

If you are new to those depths a bottom timer and cut tables are going to be your freind for a while before you even think of flying a puter at those depths. YMMV

LOL!! Just be glad that you are 21 yrs old. In the comp programming it modifies that algorithm based upon your age, ie getting old sucks.

You'll like the computer. It dives nice and the compass is sweet. Get a screen protector.

Re: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt

decostop. And no it's not worth a grand in fact the only computer normally dove by rec divers that is useful is the Cochran.Having dove everything from Suunto to Oceanic etc....next to Cochrans and my EDGE and vs VPM tables on mix or accelerated deco you'll find yourself pissing up a rope decoing while I am out, fish cleaned and iced, showered and eating little debbies and a soda. And since I ain't bent and am old I consider them useless past 120' and worse if you dive multiple day multiple dives.

Re: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt

I plan on taking courses specially to further enhance my understanding of trimix diving, its something i've never done. However my buds and I regularly dive to depths of 125-150ft currently we just want to get the best equipment for what we want to do.. we're looking to extend time at current depths & ad safety with a setup like (120&19) I just want to make sure I have the right computer to take me further once I decide to take the classes and go deeper..

Re: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt

One of the first things you'll learn is that you'll need redundant computers or BTs.An expensive computer that ony does 02 is a very expensive BT.A cheap BT or computer with guage mode is a great backup to a mix computer. It has not been my experience that there is not any real time saving with a mix computer unless you have two as you will want to try to conform to your precut tables if using 1 computer with a BT backup.

Shearwater Predator with Vpm upgrade. It is a little over a $1000 and is capable of about any dive.

Re: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt

Me and my buds want to get the best gear for doing dives to 150-175.

There are several major players to choose from that do not include the one you listed.
List:
your brain + BT
shearwater
x1
cochran

Rec gear is really not suited for where you are going, including puters

Re: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt

Cochran @ 15% conservatism seems to be what worked best but haven't dove a X1 or Shearwater side by side.YMMV of course.

Re: Atomic Aquatics Cobalt

Buy a bottom timer and find a GUE instructor that will teach you ratio deco. Do it all in your head on the fly.

I have used ratio deco from 110 to 260, it works.

I dive my emc-20 at 0 for bailout and or reality check. I am currently diving my interpretation of ratio deco with cut tables from vplanner at +3, and the cochran.

What are other hunters useing?
