Re: Heading offshore today

Can you clarify the jacked up Texas laws on Tripletail. I thought you could not shoot them at all.

Re: Heading offshore today

If he is shooting cobia I would assume that he is in federal waters where I believe triple tail are legal

Re: Heading offshore today

Recreational anglers must have a Texas fishing license and saltwater endorsement to bring any fish taken in federal waters ashore in Texas (see Fishing in Federal Waters).

Re: Heading offshore today

I just returned from a TPWD event at the Chaparral WMA. Spoke at length with two Game Wardens and I am getting information so we can send reasoned, well thought out letters regarding designation of game fish in salt water and allowing spearing of them. I am getting some inside contacts so as to present a change without sending up flares and having us look like rabid activists. We, as a community, need to be careful how changes are presented and how much noise is made. I don't want ARS yanked so we can take Cobia is a prime example. We also don't need the attention by competing resource users. I will stay in touch as my search progresses.

Re: Heading offshore today

I say we should be able to harvest what ever we want as long as it meets size and catch limits! Being we are way more selective in our harvest, we don't stress and injury half dead fish like rod reel guys! Besides our footprint is way smaller and there's only a handful of us anyways hunting this way. Seem very unfair.... I'm down

In many ways I agree, but there are lots of un-informed non-Spearos out there...and as we've seen in this thread and several recent threads many uneducated Spearos (for them I prefer to use ignorant in the perjorative) out there. Some of our Spearo family have obviously not even bothered to read the rules and jump in and shoot. The public at large sees them bringing up bait sized harvest and lump us all together as yahoos that stab anything that crosses our path. So treading lightly, using conservation style language, agreeing that size and numbers limits should be respected, but requesting specific species opening is my initial goal. There's no way I want to fight a battle over Goliath Grouper, Snook, Tarpon, Speckled Trout or Red Drum. The lobby groups are too big and too well funded on those species. We'd be wasting our effort. Initially opening up regs on Cobia, Tripletail and the Mackerals would be the goal. Mackeral are incidental since they are rarely targeted by Spearos and could be the sacrificial anode for the main targets of Cobia and Tripletail.

Look at what happened with catfish a few years ago, it got opened to bow fishing which would be a similarly small group, after one year it got shut down, the rod and reel guys screamed so loudly it got taken off.
