Questions on Moving to Hawaii

Hey everyone,

I'll be moving to the big island next month. I'm working on getting some of my bigger toys shipped out there.

Things I'm having trouble with:
22' outrigger canoe
15' ocean kayak
12' prone paddleboard

I imagine I'm not the first to send this type of stuff to Hawaii, and figure there's got to be some cheaper options than renting a whole container. If anyone has any ideas (or know of anyone willing to offer up some space in their container), please let me know.

Thanks,
Eric

You could try a freight forwarding service and check the pricing on that. When I had my truck's rock sliders shipped from the east coast, the manufacturer hooked up with Kona Trans on island to bring it in. I just went down and picked it up from Kona Trans.

I know there's Ship to Hawaii. Otherwise barging it over in the container would be the next thing.

Yup x2 what @musubi said Go through a freight forwarder they can handle it from end to end. I’ll try and contact a friend that might be able to help, if she can I’ll shoot u a PM.

Thanks guys. My logistics manager at work used his connections to find me a pretty good deal to get my toys across the pond.

Could you share the salient points (if not proprietary).
I am moving to Oahu and might benefit from your findings.

XP100, sounds good, I know there's some guys who dive bluewater regularly over there on Oahu. Wahoo, Mahi, and Yellowfin.. it's all about finding good dive partners in Hawaii. It's Clear, it's deep, or you need to get offshore, sometimes can have really very big Sharks. It's tough to find good dive partners who match your style. You really need to count on them here mostly for the Deeper diving issues.

UCLA. when you coming and where you living?

Behslayer,
I get to the big island on Tuesday (the 1st). I'll be living in Waimea.

Is Ulusub based out of the big island now? I thought you were in Indo.

Re: Questions on Moving to Hawaii

xp100,
I don't really have any insider tips on shipping. I've gotten rid of what little furniture I had, and have been sending small shipments. A 20' shipping container costs about 6k to ship (that's the cost port to port you need to figure out before and after that). For cars, go through a broker--they have a discount b/c of the quantity they ship; it won't save you much, but it's a bit cheaper.
The best website I found if you're not in the market for a container and only sending a few larger items and boxes is uship.com. You describe what your shipping and freight forwarders bid on job (some are door-to-door, some will ask you to deliver it to the port or their location).

Re: Questions on Moving to Hawaii

Cool, (literally) pack some warm clothes, gets cool up there, but Dang is it Gorgeous. Especially if you like to grow. You can grow anything in Waimea. We go up there sometimes just for the Farmers Market. I know some spearos who live up near there. Nalu, Billy M, and Mark L. Good diving around there. Great place for Kayak diving because there can be a current and it's not such a big paddle from the harbor. Nice Uku and Mu grounds. Ono and Mahi out just a bit further. Some Big Ass Tigers.. Pretty cool to be diving in Warm Clear Blue and look up and see Snowpeaks of Mauna Kea.

Yes. We are in Kona/Holualoa.

I PM you.

Behslayer,
Thanks for the information. I have heard about the Tigers and the currents. I will reconnoiter respectfully while gaining an understanding of the cultures and water there.
