DFW-OST Red Abalone Density Peer Review Underway

Months in advance of the new 2014 sport fishery abalone regulations just adopted by the California Fish & Game Commission last June, the DFW and Commission in recognition wanted to insure that the best possible methods and calculations of abalone densities were being done and asked for an independent review process of the methods and calculations to determine red abalone populations. The Abalone Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) members have been selected and the process is underway I am happy to report.

Furthermore I happy to report the DFW a few days ago for the first time in many years surveyed some sites along the San Mateo Coast. Presently the DFW abalone Survey team is up at the Mendocino abalone index sites.

As someone who used to dive that stretch, which can be pretty rough, I'd love to see it opened up for sport divers again. With no divers and no otters, the fishery has just got to be healthy again!

Thanks Dirk.......oops kind a slip somewhat on the on going with the OST-abalone SAC progress.
The link to latest's information on what took place at the "kick off" meeting #2 is:

As for wanting to see areas south of the gate reopened, all for that. Whatever product the OST abalone SAC members generate may have direct bearing on the possibility that you wish for.

Good new to report. Spoke with a OST Abalone SAC member the other day after the SAC had completed their workshop held last Wednesday the 23rd. I guess generally speaking per say, the good news is all the SAC members were very receptive too other methods and fishery practices to detect abalone populations other than what is currently being used by the DFW.

OST abalone SAC members nearing home stretch.

Hello,
You are receiving this newsletter because you expressed interest in the proceedings of the scientific and technical review of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) survey design and density estimation methods for the recreational red abalone fishery in Northern California, coordinated by the California Ocean Science Trust. As you may recall, during the Technical Review Workshop, the Science Advisory Committee (SAC) identified the need for additional data and analyses from CDFW. You may review the detailed meeting summary, including the list of additional data and analyses requests here.
Since then, there have been a series of advance. The SAC is now in the home stretch, writing the final summary outcomes document, which will include detailed recommendations regarding CDFW's density estimation methods:
SAC has been reviewing the additional analyses provided by CDFW, as well as conducting their own analyses with the raw data.

Report sections and organization are still being finalized, but the report will include an assessment of the current methodology in the context of its suitability for informing management, paired with all additional analyses conducted by the SAC so that managers and interested members of the public can fully evaluate the thinking behind conclusions of the report.

The SAC, with support provided by Ocean Science Trust, aims to finalize the report in advance of the next CA Fish and Game Commission meeting, scheduled April 16, 2014, if not before. The next Marine Resources Committee meeting is scheduled for March 24, 2014 - at this meeting Ocean Science Trust will provide an update on the status of completing the report - providing as much detail as possible. For more information on these meetings, visit here.

Finally, a crucial piece of our process for this review is a final webinar briefing for interested citizens. At this remote briefing, representatives from the SAC will provide an overview of the main preliminary conclusions from the report, and respond to questions. Following this briefing, the summary outcomes document will be finalized and delivered to CDFW and made publicly available on OST’s website. Time, date and other logistical information will be provided over this distribution list as soon as it is available, at a minimum of 10 business days in advance.
Thank you for your interest -- we will continue to keep you up to date on the progress of the review. Please visit our website for the most current information.
Best,
Ocean Science Trust team

Re: DFW-OST Red Abalone Density Peer Review Underway

The abalone finial report release: IMO what a stellar job the OST - Abalone - SAC did for red abalone fishery resources. We can only hope the DFW incorporates the SAC recommendations, but we can strongly encourage and let the F&GC know the constituency wants the DFW to follow the SAC recommendations.

Re: DFW-OST Red Abalone Density Peer Review Underway

Thank you for the update Bill!

A lot of work there, and from the basic premise of the draft, it sounds like the management will be more in line with what is really needed to properly judge abalone stocks.

Now, if we can just keep the enviro-lunatics' hands off the abalone, we might be ok!

More than Welcome Paul, and yes at this point the abalone SAC so it seems has handed us a gift on a mother of pearl platter with silver trimmings.

Looks as if the next few years for the recreational diving scene is going to hing around the two major shellfish of importance to divers, abalone and lobster. Will keep abreast of the abalone process as it unfolds further.
