2005 Hell Divers Spearfishing Rodeo

Here it comes, again! Man this is gonna be good, we’re gonna party till ya gotta get a blow torch and a putty knife to scrape the debris off your forehead the next morning!

This is the 42nd Annual Hell Divers Spearfishing Rodeo. It is held annually on the first full weekend of the month of June. This year it will start on Thursday, June 2, 2005 and will conclude on Sunday, June 5, 2005. The weigh-in and awards ceremony are held at the peninsula at the Kenner Boat Launch in Kenner, Louisiana at Williams Blvd and Lake Pontchartrain. It is open to all waters and to every diver, male or female, adults and juniors alike. Bluewater free divers, skin divers and scuba divers are all welcome and will compete in separate categories.

There are twelve scuba and skin diver categories (Amberjack, Barracuda, Cobia, Grouper, Jack Crevalle, Mangrove Snapper, Miscellaneous, Red Snapper, Triggerfish, Sheepshead, Stingray and Spadefish) and four bluewater categories (Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Dolphin and Miscellaneous.) King and Queen Trophies, Best Boat, Best Club, Best Junior and also an aggregate Sheepshead trophy (heaviest five fish.) The scales are open until 2:00 p.m. Sunday and some divers will actually shoot their sheepshead that morning in Lake Pontchartrain.

We will have concessions and beer and a live band as well as games for the kids. The prices are reasonable and will include a Rodeo T-shirt. More information will be coming out soon.

Oh, yeah! I forgot to mention the prize table. Last year was our first year with a prize table. We had almost five thousand dollars worth of dive gear up for grabs. Many of your favorite gear manufacturers showed great faith in our ability to help them grow our sport. Together we were able to entice over 20% more divers to participate in 2004 than had in the prior year. We are hoping for more of the same. We had over 100 other divers join the 33 members of the Hell Divers to make it our best year ever. We are hoping you can join us this year.

Until then, safe hunting.

Sincerely

Steve Zelenka

Chris and I had a blast last year but couldn't stay long enough to attend the weigh in. We had steve M weigh in our snappas and he said even though it was raining it still was an awesome party. This year we are definatly diving everyday and will attend the weigh in. Can't wait.

I'm looking very much forward to the rodeo, but this time don't scheduel the rain till after the party. Hope to meet some more of the locals, and drink some more of the beer. Steve if you are going to need a couple more for your trip I"m sure I know where you can find them.

T-Shirts are in the works. It's gonna be a good time. Last year would have been perfect except for the unscheduled tropical storm that came roaring in off of Lake Pontchartrain. C'est la vie!

I'll re-run some tournament photos a little later(Including the photo of the Rodeo King with all his booty.)

Armor will represent this year On the "Dive by Shooter." We are also going to be a major sponsor. So all you Florida boys come show your support.

Re: 2005 Hell Divers Spearfishing Rodeo

Thanks again to you, Sean, and DaveC at Armor Products. I really enjoyed talking to your dad the other day, he's a good guy. My dad taught me fishing but would never get in the water with me. Anyway, I will be sending you some Rodeo information probably next week after our Monday night meeting.

The Rodeo's success is directly related to the support given us by the dive industry. For this we certainly want to give our support to them. Two of the local Armor Products vendors are Ronnie Temento @ Temento's on the Westbank and Chris Kopecky @ Adventure Quest at the I-10 and Causeway Blvd.

Re: 2005 Hell Divers Spearfishing Rodeo

There are several other sponsors who have commited to our Rodeo as well. Some, but not all, include the following:

Chad Carney - Mobile Scuba/Charter boat Cubera/Zeagle/Wong
Spearfishing Specialties - Kevin Bruinton
Unified Marine - Justin Gould (NutzWet)
Offshore Hunter/FRA/SPUC - Denny O'Hern
Riffe Spearguns - Julie and Jay Riffe
Zeagle Systems - Scott L.
Armor Products - Sean and Dave Carmichael
Aimrite Spearguns - Rick Bettua
Wong Spearguns - Daryl Wong
Florida Freedivers - Mike Damms

It is still early. Many others will be added to the list.

Also, let me not forget the contribution of Scott McPherson and Spearboard.com for their support in '04 as well as the existence of the great forum to getting the word out.

Re: 2005 Hell Divers Spearfishing Rodeo

Excellent. I really like your product, saw one at the '04 SBO. They definitely make the long runs more tolerable.

I will be meeting with the club Monday and will pass on the contacts for our webmaster to put some links on our site for all of our sponsors.

Re: 2005 Hell Divers Spearfishing Rodeo

SDT,

Wanted to ask you when you birthday fell. Reason is the Junior category for this years HDR. I felt for you last year, you could have walked away with the Aimrite gun as Champion Junior. Anyway, there will be another one for this year. The biggest fish taken by a junior will win the gun. Make sure you get a good AJ or Grouper.

Also, there is a local High School(Central Lafourche High School) that has a SCUBA/Fish I.D. Course that focused on spearing (wish it was available to me when I was in H.S.) They had a local dive charter captain, Alan Walker, who is very involved in fisheries management and rig preservation, involved in the course. Alan also brought along his buddy, Manny Puig, to get the kids interested. Hopefully they learned their lessons well. I guess the point is that we should have a larger group of junior divers participating this year.

Bring your A game, Chris!
