Managing Shooting Line - On Spare Shafts Or For Traveling

A while back - in a thread I can't find now - we talked about tricks to manage shooting line on rigged, spare shafts (or for traveling). I've tried velcro and tape and they are both not great methods.
Someone mentioned using CD covers and I honestly can't recall if anyone mentioned using spiral cable/wire cover but I just tried it and it's frikkin awesome. I really think I have found the Holy Grail now - unless I read it in that thread and forgot.

If you coil the line nicer you can close the loop with the spiral cover even more but this was my very first try. It seems to hold the line firmly in place.

Apologies for the metrics here, but I used what is sold as the 10mm size. And even for the fairly short and thin line in that pic (two wraps, 100 gun, 1.4mm mono) it was a bit tight. I'd think the next two sizes up are better choices (12/15mm).

Feel free to share your other tricks in this thread or link to the one I can't find if it rings a bell for you.

Small single lure bag works really well too. Much faster to get on and off, probably a little less secure. Not as easy to lose. They are $3 - $5. Both Red Tide Spearfishing and Headhunter spearfishing make them specific for shaft rigging.

Thanks for those links, those bags look to do the job well, too.

Just posting the pics from those two links in case Castro's links die later on:

You're welcome.

I also have a few extra that I use for traveling. I'll put a few spare pre-cut shooting line lengths with crimps and a crimper in one. I'll put misc. tools in another. They are good to keep organized and separated.

Yeah, I used to shoot documentary photography projects in all sorts of funky places and found Eagle Creeks zipper pouches to be amazing for dropping cables into, toiletry in another and tools in a third, if needed. But often the zippers aren't stainless so one ocean trip with an otherwise good brand name bag and it seizes up. (The older Eagle Creeks did, dunno if they changed it)

The cable wrap is a pretty neat idea as once you remove the shooting line from it you can put the cable wrap on your other spare shaft for storage, assuming that you carry more than one spare shaft as many of us do as without ammo our guns are useless. Ditto for spare bands.

I just use a few tiny zip ties which I cut off the ends off. A few zip ties on the line and one or two to hold the line to the shaft. I do like the Red Tide version ... very tidy and very good line management! Hard to explain how useful doing something like that is!

Zip ties aren't bad at all. Better than Velcro which moves around on me and tape which often leaves a sticky residue. So far, to me, this wrap shows more promise. But the more options the merrier:-)

I think that the cable wrap can be wound on very easily, you just get the end started on the coil of mono and it just threads on by twisting it and at the same time it gathers up the disparate coils which may not initially be all of the same loop diameter, but will equalize as the cable wrap winds on.

Great idea on the cable wrap conduit. I'm leaving on a trip in a few weeks and actually have some of that exact conduit in my shop so I'll be using that for sure.

Definitely going to try the cable wrap idea. Nice one!.

I sometimes use blue masking tape which leaves little or no residue. But, when I have nothing to use, I weave 18"-2' of the loose end around the coil and the shaft as well, so that the coil is held to the shaft. Works pretty well.

If you do not wrap the shaft as well, then tangles happen much more often.

For more pliable shooting lines with woven cords this is the line wrapping transport system used by Russian company "Taimen". These plastic end caps could be replicated to fit other types of shaft. Due to monofilament’s propensity to kink on sharp bends this system is no good for mono, but OK for everything else.
