Aftermarket roller head muzzle - Power Head

I was wondering if anyone had experience with the Power Head roller muzzle.

http://spearfishingcharters.com.au/roller-spearguns/

I'm thinking of getting something like a standard 110 euro gun for freshwater and reef use and then be able to switch out to the roller head for big pelagic action!

I wonder how the balance / weight of the gun might be affected.

For $200, it's obviously cheaper than a new / large gun, easier to travel with, more maneuverable and should improve recoil and not need 3-4 bands.

I'm intrigued, but would love to hear other people's experience with this "bolt-on", as in practice I imagine that it would react differently on different makes / models.

Welcome to the board. Have you ever seen this product in person?

Re: Aftermarket roller head muzzle - Power Head

Thanks for the welcome!

I have not seen it in person.
I was thinking of pairing it with a Mako railgun.

I'm a Canadian in Ontario, so I'd use the regular muzzle or a pole spear for Canadian (non-Ontarian) freshwater and the roller for spearing trips to Cuba, the Keys, etc.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Aftermarket roller head muzzle - Power Head

Welcome to Spearboard, Apneaddict!

I'm don't believe the mechanical advantage of the single band roller is going to be that great as to shoot further than a 3-4 banded speargun with an 8mm spear shaft, even if it was a 110cm.

Regardless, I say go for it!

I've recently purchased an Alemanni Roller kit for and Omer HF 90, directly from them, which arrived yesterday. http://alemanni-sub.it/kit-per-rollerizzare-arbaleti/

Italian sales tax and shipping are ridiculous, but, thanks to a friend of theirs who was visiting and heading back to the USA, I managed to work out a sweet shipping deal.

My original intention was to use it with my HF 90 with a 7mm spear shaft for a compact clear water reef rig. I was so pumped up from getting it, I purchased an OMER HF 110, to open up the light bluewater possibilities.

Re: Aftermarket roller head muzzle - Power Head

i got one for my hf2 110. if u do get one, make sure it comes with the correct adaptor size for your barrel ID, you may have to purchase separately.

the one you linked to is very similar to the alemanni head as well.

in terms of balance, it doesnt affect it much at all. especially as you will be putting it on a relatively short gun.

i havent had a chance to try out the full power of it yet however, as i got a shaft that has 5 tabs, i was using the first tab (about halfway down the shaft) and this was sufficient for closer shots in the reef (chasing crays).

when i was researching it, i was apprehensive about the rigging and loading complications, but in reality they're not that drastic. double wrap isnt too hard to do, and the rubber itself isnt all that hard to load either.

i dont regret getting one

You realize that they are shooting twin 14mm bands in that first video. Twin 16mm bands make a big difference.

Re: Aftermarket roller head muzzle - Power Head

Originally, I was going to buy a 120cm gun with twin 16mm bands, primarily for med size blue water and larger clear water reef work. It is a compromise and used largely for travel.

With a roller muzzle, I'm considering a 110 cm gun (I'm not particularly tall / have short arms and not sure I could reach a 120cm roller barrel for easy reloading) with 16 or 18mm main band, with the possibility to add a second 14 or even 16mm band for big pelagics.

To me, it seems to offer something that I was previously unable to achieve in a single gun.

I could even put on a 14mm main band or use the closest sharkfin for murky Canadian lakes and 3-10lb'ers that are too skittish to get close enough to with a polespear.

Re: Aftermarket roller head muzzle - Power Head

I brought two of these with me from Greece this summer. Steve Veros made a roller gun with the one and i can sell the other one if you want it.

That is an interesting speargun, Cyprus. Care to share your experiences with your custom Veros roller euro-hybrid?

More pics, too. I don't like being teased by that small pic!

Emanuel is great bloke to deal with. I have used this roller kit and a RA 1.3. It provided lots of power and great shaft speed.

It did get tangled twice that was a pain to deal with. With more experience I may have been able to avoid it but only had 1 day diving with it.

Re: Aftermarket roller head muzzle - Power Head

It is not my gun. Steve made it for himself. It has no tangling issues he said and a lot of power. It is a bit difficult to load. They have been using the MVD heads in Greece for a while now. The company came out with a smaller version and also with heads tofit specific guns like picasso, omer, etc
