Coos Bay report

My 15 year old son and his grandmother went spearfishing today along the cribs. Came back with beautiful blacks, stories of missed lings and large sea trout. Overall there are a lot of fish in the bay. Visibility was less than five feet but helped to beat the winter blues. In protected areas of the bay visibility has been excellent at times. It is always hit and miss. The ocean is too rough at the moment to be considered, however, i am spotting hidden reef opportunities for those that want to hike. If there are any spearos wanting to head this way you are welcome to stay at my house which is close to the water. My boat is gassed up and the kayaks are ready. I want to encourage more people to this area so I have people to dive with.

Nice report. Very cool that your son is spearfishing with his grandmother!

I've never made it quite that far south and would love to come spear some time.

Is sea trout another term for greenling?

I've been aiming to make it to south oregon coast as well.
Mostly aiming at Brookings + or - though, but Coos is on the way from PDX.

ALL - BTW - for NW spearo trips, I'm now equipped with a 24' travel trailer, sleeps 5 comfortably. F350 tow vehicle... for longer stints say at N.Oregon sites, Brookings trip or Neah trip.

Greenling and sea trout are the same thing. Wonderful to eat. This county seems to have its own language and dialect. They have about 200 names for the black rockfish (Sebastes melanops). I never know what they are talking about. I plan to free dive today and if at all possible will be LING-ing in the new year.

Re: Coos Bay report

According to my step son's Grandmother, a scuba diver in her 60's, visibility was 5-6 feet today at the Cribs. Lot of blacks, but no lings. She is also shooting copper rocks, which she is told are legal by the state, even though the first edition of the fishing rules shows them as prohibited. This woman is officially kicking my ass. While I was huddled by the fire avoiding rain squalls to get more wood, she was out scouring the bottom for lings. To top it off she dropped off fish at our house! She is either worried that I will go hungry as a free spirited free diver or, her freezer runneth over. Once I figure out how to post pics I can show an 18" black rock and a pile of smaller rock fish.

Limits of lings for the boat today. I was the driver unfortunately! All three divers got lings , blacks and copper rocks in just over an hour. Visibility was around 6'.

Re: Coos Bay report

An easy 10' of visibility today for about an hour at the top of tide. That was inside the bay. The swells in the ocean looked huge. The bay is full of crabs and bottom fish. I don't think the conditions are good enough to travel for unless you are scuba diving.

8-10 feet of visibility today in the bay. Lings were in abundance, with no wind and no chop.
