The Great Giant Sea Bass Count

Hey there all spearos and divers!

I am an undergraduate working with a group of researchers here at the University of California Santa Barbara (in conjunction with California State University Northridge) studying the distribution and behavior of Giant Sea Bass in Californian waters. One of the major elements of our study is the "Great Giant Sea Bass Count". From August 1st through August 7th, we are asking recreational divers to go out and dive, keep their eyes peeled for GSB, and let us know if/how many GSB they spotted on their dive(s).

While blowing bubbles might not be the sneakiest way to creep up on your favorite game fish, this kind of "citizen science" provides a fun way for all of us to contribute to our greater knowledge of this awe inspiring species that we currently know relatively little about. As with most surveys or this kind, the larger the sample size the better, so any and all participation is immensely helpful and greatly appreciated!

The official "Great Giant Sea Bass Count" flier is attached to provide more information on exactly what we are asking you to do and how to contact us with information or questions. Also, feel free to PM me with any additional questions, concerns, or ideas.

Wishing you warm water and excellent viz,

Conner Jainese

Re: The Great Giant Sea Bass Count

That whole thing about 'blowing bubbles'..............

For the most part, we are not breathhold challenged, and as such- we might participate, but dispense with the very notion of using tanks while stalking fish locally.

I'll try to join in!

Re: The Great Giant Sea Bass Count

I've had the privilege of diving with a couple of researchers doing surveys on the Giant Seabass here on Catalina. They're a good bunch of guys, and are doing some neat work. While most of us here in Southern California spearfish while freediving, I'm sure a good percentage of us also recreationally dive. If you do, and happen to come across these behemoths, share the stoke and data!

Yeah, they are resident on some spots I dive. I see them most times I go there. Cute but kind of obnoxious. Hard to put a count on it since I'm going up and down in 65' of water but they probably number in the dozens; I've seen as many as 6 on one drop.

Re: The Great Giant Sea Bass Count

Oh we definitely encourage and appreciate any participation! Free/scuba diving, coastal/islands, hunting/not hunting, its all appreciated! So if you'd rather breath hold with railgun in hand, and just keep an eye peeled for a GSB, that is totally cool! All we ask is that (when counting GSB) you try not to double back on an area as to avoid counting the same fish twice. I have a feeling most of us coastal spearos, however, would be more than lucky to see just one of these guys! Thanks for the interest and please feel free to contribute any ideas or bring up any issues you might think of.

Re: The Great Giant Sea Bass Count

Also, somebody brought this article to my attention about the count. If anyone wanted a little more info/background on the count and the researchers involved just follow the link. Thanks!

Re: The Great Giant Sea Bass Count

I have seen 3 different black sea bass of little corona the last year or so. One is around 100lbs, an other 200 ish and then the 250 lbs fish that hangs out right at the north corner of the reef. Watched him eat a barracuda several months ago.

It makes me cringe seeing a gun thrown in the sand like that.

Re: The Great Giant Sea Bass Count

Also FYI, there is a Facebook page called the "Giant Sea Bass Collective" that has tons of pics and videos of divers that are spotting GSB around the islands. It's a cool place to watch a couple of videos and get stoked on this project! If you've got the time and are even slightly interested, go ahead and check it out!

As always, wishing you guys/gals good viz and warm/fishy water
