pain in my lower left side (kidney maybe) while spearfishing?
Hey guys,
I'm looking for a little help. I took almost an 5 year break from diving(had twins) and am now getting back at it. Been fishing on reasonably shallow reefs (about 30ft +/-) over the last several day and yesterday decided to get after it and fished in 65ft of water (shot a beautiful mutton). On about my 6th dive i had a pain in my lower left side, i think my kidneys. I'm not sure what to think of it and im in the middle of a vacation and really want to get back in the water ASAP, but im kind of concerned about it. Anyone know whats going on with me and how i should proceed? |

Are you freediving or scuba? Not sure what you could have done that would impact your kidneys. Maybe move kidney stones around?
You could have also sprained your diaphragm. If you're freediving, at 65', your lungs are compressed about as much as a full exhale, so you could be at the point of straining you diaphragm if it's not used to that much movement. Any other symptoms? Constant pain, only when you're at depth or one time occurrence? |

freediving. Its gotten better though. That day i had been at the beach with my kids earlier and think i hadnt taken in enough water and maybe that played a role. Since that day ive been fishing times in 75ft and felt perfect. Hopefully it wont happen again.

Some people born with a condition called "Mediterranean anemia" (I'm one of those), maybe is your spleen. have you ever felt the same pain when you have ben in high altitude? If the answer is yes, that could be the reason.
There's nothing you can do, but stay hydrated as much as possible.

When in doubt, start with drinking lots of water. Lack of hydration can cause such a wide range of symptoms.
It never hurts to drink too much water! |

Try drinking 4 oz. of cranberry juice 100% - not cocktail with too much sugar/corn syrup etc. AND stay plenty hydrated as already suggested.
