Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

Just back from Catalina with all the usual types of good fun (*sun, boats, diving, swimming, etc, etc, repeat, repeat, repeat...). Saw a nice Anderson 26 lobster boat working out of Cat Harbor, and tried out and fell in love with my new 'shade awning' that's a three minute setup or takedown.....not for use when underway, but more for at anchorage or on a mooring. Hooks onto the rod holder and creates a nice dark spot underneath it. Nothing quite as nice as staying out of the sun on a hot day at Catalina on the inside mooring line...

It's definitely not the old Brooks boat...that sold a few months ago and I believe was on it way to HI.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the boat in the pic was one that Radon built for the Navy for dolphin research? Atleast that what the guy that bought it a few years ago said when I ran into him at the launch ramp. I was under the impression it was this boat (see pic), but that's a 1981 and they have this one listed as a 96? The cabin is obviously a homebuilt and not one Don did.

Awesome pics at Cat Skiff, that sunshade is an awesome addition to your rig!

We got a deal from the Navy. think we spent everything we saved on building it. But so far it is fast and dry.

I need to mount the electronics and finish wiring lights, I added a 9'6" gun locker to starboard, under a bench seat. 7' cuddy cabin, 6' open back cabin, with 6'4" head room.
You're right Mark. I'm quoting the discussion from a few years back (see page 31)

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

well worth the wait, 415.

canyon came down to the SB guest slip saturday night and we knocked the froth off a couple (or a couple dozen?) after my son decided to shut it down in the vee berth. don stopped down sunday AM and made the trip to redondo with us. was a good thing as well....

driving by radar in thick as pea soup fog for the first time on a brand new boat that you've never driven before was about as white knuckle as it gets.... damn near hit a random NOAA buoy that didn't really seem to show up on the radar and wasn't supposed to be there..... that was on the back side of anacapa and i was really uncomfortable from then until the fog broke about 10 miles from king harbor.

once the fog lifted, my son's mood improved, i calmed down and we ran into a HUGE pod of dolphins. don took the helm so i could go up to the bow with my son and get to see him have his first experience with dolphins running underneath the boat. he completely freaked out. was amazing.

as we came into redondo a buddy met us out there and got a couple photos. this was my favorite. shows the boat pretty well and a happy little dude who was real real happy to be home!

one more.....

J_P- that is a new standard of excellence, just an insane platform for unlimited adventures. Fantastic!

Maybe if I start adding two or three bottles of this with every tankful in mine, it'll turn into yours?

I want to extend my deepest condolences to the OP of this thread, Lance Merker who just lost his father, Ron. This guy was a waterman of the first order and a class act. It's all our loss.

Judging from the photo's and the legacy he has left behind in you and Kyle (and every diver he has influenced) I would say he did an amazing job living life and that's what it's all about!
