Croaking
I have been diving some kelp somewhere which every evening goes off like a orchestra of wsb crocking it's incredibly loud and sounds like there are thousands of wsb right next to you but I have yet to see one. So question is how far do these croaks move through the water as in how far can I really hear these croaks from ?

Re: Croaking
The croaking travels... and it bounces off rocks and things....
Ive shot WSB in beds where the croaking was so loud you there there is a fish around every kelp stalk... and the next day the croaking is just as loud and I see nothing... Often times the fish are just outside in deeper water (~80-100ft) croaking away and its echoing up into the Kelp rooms making it sound like they are right next to you. I have also shot fish in beds where you hear nothing and it seems totally empty... I have "followed" croaking for hours... and never seen a thing. and I have "Followed" the croaking and ran right into fish... no magic answers there... but its fun to listen too them. |

Re: Croaking
If you aren't seeing them inside, move outside in deeper water and drop half-way down to the bottom...I have landed in the middle of a school more than once doing this. Works best at sunset when they start grouping up out deep to spawn or feed on squid nests. Limited vis and light makes it a bit spooky but, the fish often will let you swim among them and pick the best target without zooming away....Works good between reefs over sand, such as you find by Catalina's Isthmus area..

Re: Croaking
Sounds travel ridiculously far underwater. I have found it useless to chase the croaks. Rather try to time the conditions when the fish are tight to cover, because they will move when the conditions align.

Re: Croaking
Seems to always been a waste of time “chasing” croaks. Most of the time they’re croaking outside of you in deeper water. But I have been croaked “at” before when a fish feels me coming. Almost like a grunt/bark. Instead of the deep long locator croak.
