I got out up north saturday afternoon and found awesome conditions despite the swell showing. Vis was solid 15-20 top to bottom and double that horizontally in the top 12 feet of water. Starting in a bout 3' of water it was crawling with bait and short calicos, and perch. Few bugs and no game fish were sighted, temp was 72!! I came home empty handed, but stoked to have been out. Hundreds of good sized bat rays were parading in lines up the coast, and a few were makin bacon with their tails up and their claspers and junk dangling as they swam stacked on ech other. I got greeted by by DFG, and pumped them for intel...10 (edit: it said 19, that was a typo) guys got checked at mesa lane and t steps Friday night...all zeroes. Nice seabass Brett! Congrats, any legal bass from shore is a prize. Jeremy

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
From todays edhat
By Dan Seibert This afternoon I got a phone call from my friend Tara. She was calling from the harbor and said she had been hit by a shark and needed help getting her outrigger canoe off the beach. She was about two miles off of the lighthouse when she felt a big hit on the back of the canoe. She kept her balance and a second later she sees a shark bite down on the ama (the float that keeps the canoe upright) and it knocks her off. Looking underwater she's face to face with a shark. The shark is biting the ama and thrashing, but that allows her to climb back on facing backwards. The shark continues to bite and she takes her paddle and hits it. It released, she rolled over and composed herself. She said the adrenaline was flowing at a lifetime high as she paddled back. The harbor was her goal but the ama was filling with water so she beached it at Leadbetter point. The photos show the Harbor Patrol was there to take a report, then Tara shared the story with people. You can see her acting out the hit with the paddle, climbing on backwards and the reaction of the people. And on a side note, when I met Tara in the harbor we ran into Lou Christman, the boat owner that rescued some kayaker two weeks ago from a shark attack. He's being interviewed tomorrow by the producers of "Shark Week." Now Tara will also take part in that. 3 comments on this article. Read/Add

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
The swell has things churned up in town. Any eyes on the water "up the coast"? The near shore models are showing a bit of a swell shadow up that way.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
water conditions on the backside of Cruz last Sunday were epic. 70º water and probably 60' to 80' of viz (or better). Best conditions I've seen in a few years.
Lots of bait everywhere and just generally beautiful conditions. Let's hope this weather system doesn't screw things up for next weekend... Oh, and regarding the GWS sightings/interactions - if you're relatively new to either the area or the sport, you should probably know that EVERY October, the water seems to light up with reports of "interactions" with GWS between Pt. Conception and San Diego. Every other year there has been a fatality off Surf Beach (Lompoc) and several times each Fall there are various reports off Leadbetter and Carp Reef. Most years I also see at least one chomped sea lion floating around off the coast or islands. Unfortunately It also happens to typically be the best diving conditions of the whole year, both along the coast and at the islands!

Did not look too spectacular from the 101 south yesterday. Quite noticeable bump and green murk in tight. From Gaviota to Ventura.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
Just checked waves/water at campus point, tide was high and the water actually looked pretty good..I could see the boulders on the bottom past poles from the car lot, might go for a dive
