Baja

I know a couple of people that finally connected and sent reports from baja. Looks like for the second day the crossing into MX from TJ has been closed but the CHP has been diverting traffic through Otay Mesa.

Not sure if you want to head down there now but its worth the chance if you have a 2 tanker. I would head out of Tecate since the only consistent fuel depository that has gas is en la Rumarosa. This is coming from my dad that heads to baja once a week.

Avoid Mx1 if possible and hide your valuable gas.

Had a trip scheduled on my birthday weekend (22nd) but the fam bam talked me out of it.

Re: Baja

Yes; not the best scenario to travel down there right now.

The lady across from our shop has business in Mx. in several locations. She flew out from Guadalajara last week, under limited situation: Alaska air flew from Guad, to Mexico City, then transferred to a larger jet and on to L.A.
They were taking ONLY non- Mexican nationals on flights at the moment. The plane was nothing but US, Canadian and European passported passengers.
She said it's more like an evacuation than a flight out.

As Leo is hinting; it's not the best time to head to Baja.......... Hope they get it sorted soon.

Re: Baja

My buddy came back into the states from a Baja trip last Friday. They had to cut the trip short because the gas crisis hit right when they got to BoLA. They bought diesel from someones back yard and were told not to go through Tecate (that's where they entered) so went through Mexicali. He recommends strongly that's it's not a fun situation and not to gon down.

Re: Baja

We were down for 5 days over the new year weekend and didn't have any trouble, but my buddy that took a few extra days and headed down to Guerra Negro got caught up in roadblocks coming back through San Quentin. He threw it into 4wd and bypassed the trouble by following the aroyos and dirt roads.

What exactly is going on down there? Fuel shortages? Prices out of control?

Both from what I hear. They've had some issues with their refineries and gas prices have gone up significantly. Lots of protests, some violent, some peaceful.

Heard that the refineries are trucking gas out with police escorts right now. The situation is developing daily.

PEMEX announced 20% price increase. People are pissed. Protests ensue.

I was down there as well just as this all started. Had no problem getting gas early in the morning. Afternoon in Mulege was not gonna happen and had no problem in guerro negro. Pemex in gonzaga had zero line but I still had three cans.

Its a 100 percent price increase in Baja, it may be 20 percent in DF but people are finally rising up. As a consiquence, not only did fuel go up but so did the cost of food and everything else. Keep in mind of the stuff that happend in Camilu and San Quietin 2 years ago when they went apeshit and rioted over food prices going up.

Someone i know went to San Q during that time and they made the trip happen only because they had a boat filled with gas.

While it may look peaceful from up here in the US, people on MX1 created a roadblock by rolling over a Pinos big rig.

From what I hear there is little to no gas south of Ensenada. Which means if you cant get gas at El Rosario you are screwed.

People are not anti-US yet but lets see what happens on the 20th.

Re: Baja

I bought gas in Guadalajara this morning. I finally saw the 20% price increase, but no shortage. This is caused by speculators driving the price up, not by any real shortage. When Pemex competitor stations soon open up competition will drive the price down

If they open it up to competition, it can work.........

So long as the people don't rob and burn down the competition.

It will be understood that when new stations open, they will not be allowed to undercut the Pemex stations; unfair business practices stuff. And I don't think that there will be any fuel supplier other than Pemex, so they will still have control overall.

I read a report on the volume of fuel stealing by the cartels; they are taking some odd 2 BILLLION dollars annual in fuel from the pipelines. That's a staggering number to lose, no matter how big your business is, and no matter if it's government owned, or privately owned. It's not really possible to have an honest system and accounting with that going on.

Re: Baja

I was in Cabo (our every other week food run) the other day and saw a Gasso gas station free market is coming. My guess is this is the government is trying to cash in before free market drives the price down.

Not really, 7-11 and Oxxo will be selling gas privately. What i have a problem with is the oil exploration bs and the fact that Carlos Slim is buying alot of land down there.

For anyone that fished or speared in Baja last year you would have seen the Sea Sheppard and heard about the mass confiscation of boats from people that live there. I call BS. Its a front to finally mine the Sea of Cortez.

Duh, we paid almost 5 bucks a gallon under Bush to support what? Its happening there now but the people are hurting worst than we ever were.

It's the cartels, but yes; they have 'cover' from paid off politicians who do not interfere with their fuel stealing.

Crazy part is, the oil, gas, etc. is the people's, per the Mexican constitution, controlled by the government. By going along with the cartels stealing the fuel, they are basically letting the cartels steal from them.

But this is a way of existing which has persisted in Mexico since the Spanish were kicked out.

In a crazy way, I hope deep down inside that Carlos Slim is not hand in hand with the cartels, or is strong enough to resist them; he actually is very charitable to the Mexican people. Would be nice to see him push to make a better government for the people, but that is wishing an awful lot...... (Too much.....)
