Veteran's Day
Today is called Veteran's day. I like the idea. Although a lot of consumerism is associated with the day it isn't linked to consumerism directly as are the Mother's and Father's days and Christmas.
In my lifetime I can recall Vietnam, some "small" military engagements such as Grenada and then the Gulf War (Desert Storm), the Bush/Cheney war on Iraq and what we have now, which seems to be a constant state of war with a current focus on Afghanistan. In WWII Adolph Hitler was able to rise to power due in part to to the German people's dissatisfaction at having to live with some very harsh terms in the Treaty of Versailles, which punished Germany for the damages done in WWI. WWII seems like a no-brainer. Hitler's insanity seemed to be a credible threat to all of the planet. Since then none of the wars seem to make much sense. What I see is that the Military Industrial Complex and paranoid individuals in the US government provide weapons to unbalanced and brutal dictators worldwide. Then those dictators are seen as out of control and the US "steps in" to put down the thing that it has created and which has gotten out of control. Other military involvements are thinly disguised means for power-brokers to upset the balance of a country so that their natural or other resources may be controlled (cash can flow through the "right" hands). I feel sorry for the young men and women who die and lose limbs or who are emotionally scarred. I think that once the WWII veterans are all dead that perhaps we should rename the day as Young Pawns day. This could be a day for the nation to mourn that our government and our representatives have been purchased by big business and the Military Industrial Complex, and that they pretty much do as they please to all of us, and that their propaganda has us waving flags and screaming patriotic slogans (and for blood), as they send our sons and daughters into harms way to feed their money-lust, and as a band-aid for their poor policy and paranoia.

Re: Veteran's Day
Veterans Day is November 11. Today is Memorial Day, a day of rememberance of those who lost their lives serving their nation

Re: Veteran's Day
Getting Veterans Day mixed up with Memorial Day is pretty idiotic

Re: Veteran's Day
If it offends anyone I apologize. I even got a private message that I might want to change it. I think I was trying to be smart and started off stupid and I should have to live with that, so I won't try to rename or delete the thread.
I'm not too embarrassed about it (but I am a little). What I am embarrassed by though is that I haven't done more to try make changes in the world that would keep our children out of harms way.

no matter who they put up, with perhaps a few exceptions is going to be bad. I think if Thomas Dilorenzo's vision of only 10% voter turnout were to happen then we all might realize how much strength we the people can exert. https://www.lewrockwell.com/2008/10/...o/dont-vote-4/
