Technical Spearfishing Technical Scuba diving is generally defined as going deeper than 130 feet. You must have the proper training for this extreme aspect of spearfishing. |

Slightly bent or Narced
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday me and 4 other guys were doing some rig diving about 60mi South of Dauphin Island, AL. The Amberjacks were plentiful and we were having a blast. Only one of us divers had ever ventured out past the 100-130ft range. We're quite use to sticking and wrestling big fish on the bottom. However, a few of the rigs were +300ft range. I dropped down inside the legs of one to about 130ft and stuck a monster AJ. He was so fat that the little double-banded JBL magnum only made a partial penetration. As I wrestled to hand shove the shaft the rest of the way through I took beating. Eventually he powered loose and swam down into the murk. I looked at my computer to see that I was 216ft deep and getting REALLY close to out of air <500psi. I made it back to the boat, but everthing felt like a dream and I was very disoriented. When I touched my leg with my hand it felt like someone else's hand. I never experience any joint pain or nausea and within 30min I felt fine... Any ideas on what happened? __________________

Re: Slightly bent or Narced
Just my two cents but I would be calling dan. I definitly would not be diving for another 72 hours. You know dan will talk to you even if you aren't a member give them a call.

Re: Slightly bent or Narced
yes u need to have somone with you for the next few days just to be sure u seemed like u deff should have been narced but as you come up the symptoms will immediately go away just be more carefully next time a big aj is not worth some rov or sat dive to pull u from 500ft. to great diving

Re: Slightly bent or Narced
Your not bent, just lucky to be alive. You may want to get a little more experience rig diving before trying to tackle Ajs on deep platforms. Don’t take this with a grain of salt, you had no buisness trying to grab a green AJ at depth. Get some more experince, get a real gun, your BC looks like a mardi gras float with all that shit hangin off it, get more stream lined. I’m not tryin to be a dick, just tryin to maybe save your life.

Re: Slightly bent or Narced
Ron,
I agree a contact to DAN would be a good thing to do. I've e-mailed them about medical issues with potential students, and although they will not prescribe, they will load you up with the best published information you can find anywhere. But don't be general with them, get very specific. From your story it sounds like this was not dive #1, maybe not even #2? Get together all the details you can so you can get the best feedback possible. They might want to download your computer if it's possible. You dove on the 7th and you are not symptomatic tonight, so it sounds like you got away with it. Most DCS symptoms will be apparent in the first 30 minutes, especially with extreme dives. Your dive & shooting experience sounds moderate from what little you've said. I tell my students to build pyramids of experience, not towers...so take your time. Get a seroius gun and dial it in completely on medium fish in medium depths. Consider some training from qualified divers up there... check the spearfishing shops, clubs or instructors you can find on-line in your area. Try the upper Gulf coast section here. Chad

Re: Slightly bent or Narced
I had a very similar experience out of south pass LA. I shot a big aj in 1000+ feet off a rig and it took me from about 115ft to 169ft before I could get him killed. I luckly had a steel 130 and a 40% EAN pony tank that I use at a safety stop. He weighed 78lbs. Glad you are ok. Be safe.

Re: Slightly bent or Narced
be careful man watch for signs and symptoms of dcs
remember a few rules.. number of ascents must equal the number of decents If you wouldnt stick your dick somewhere then dont stick your finger there (more of a commercial diver rule) dont die and get the money get the money get the money
