Technical Spearfishing Technical Scuba diving is generally defined as going deeper than 130 feet. You must have the proper training for this extreme aspect of spearfishing. |

Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
What is the best way to rig them. I don't like the stainless hose clamps and swivel brackets. They get out of alignment and are a pain. I actually like it ciped accross my BC from top left to bottom right. Any thoughts??

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
a 30 is going to have a bit more bulk, but i carry a 13cf under the wing, 1st stage pointed down , on my zeagle tech bcd. works pretty good for me, easy to turn on and off with my right hand, out of the way of dragging on stuff

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
I prefer my 30 stage bottle behind me. Too much clutter up front for spearfishing IMO.
Zeagle HD Pony tank holders shown here are simple and solid. I can change stage bottles or primary tanks in seconds without tools. Chad

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
I used a boat tie down ratchet to clamp the pony onto the 120lp, offset to the right side as you did. Worked really well and inexpensive but I felt myself swimming sideways wich was anoying. Do you have that problem?

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
I found a sash weight (maybe 3 lbs) on an OW training dive in the Gulf Thursday.
Put it in my right pocket... hated the imbalance and overweighting, but it's a perfect marker weight! CC

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
On another note, I need to keep extra weight on cause sometimes I use 80s and the last thing I want is to float up durind my ss.

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
You wouldn't put a fairing off an Electro-Glide on that scooter would ya?
Change buoyancy... change ballast. Chad

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
I sling 2 al40s on my right side when diving mix.My upper D-ring is lo under my armpit and the waist is right on my hip.
The backmounted setups kill a diver every year or 2.... even the rocketscientistknowitall type with "1000s" of dives. It seems they also panic in an emergency and have neen known to put a hi po2 reg in their mouth despite the mouthpiece being different. 1 of them was my freind Bill(seabeast) Newman and we miss him a lot around here.

I started tying my pony accross my chest and find it easier to deal with. Being it a 30cf, it is quite large and getting in and out of the boat when we use a ladder that is a swim ladder rather than a dive ladder is very difficult. As I swim up to the boat and hand my gun and loose gear to the driver, I also unclip the pony and hand it over. Makes for easier climbing in and out. Also, there is no searching for the reg since the 1st stage is right there under my chin. And being clipped to my chest, it is at the lowest point of mass and sort of ballasts me rather than tilt me. I still need to find a better way to store the regs since I have been just letting them drag under me. I also leave my pony valve open and ready to go. |

Thanks Dago, can you expand on the benefits of it being closed. Also wonder if water might be backpressured into the second stage at depth, guess not. Is that a spearfishing setup or foto, other work? |

Re: Rigging 30cu pony bottle.
Wow, I just had an epiphany! I'm going to double my bottom tanks, triple my deco gas supply and move it all off my back, and get it out in front of me. I'll also move my gauges to my wrists and buy some short stiff fins. I should have taken my ques from cave divers a long time ago, they do it right... and know everything there is to know about spearfishing and the ocean! It's not rocket science; to think I've been doing it wrong all these thousands of dives... I'm feeling safer already!
