Re: Action in Costa Rica.

We went for a summer hook and line trip to the Northern coast and caught some Mahi and Wahoo. I don't think summers the greatest time to spear in Costa.
Awesome fish!

Re: Action in Costa Rica.

Today we got a pretty good visi but fish was rare...
This sailfish was swimming on the surface by the time we were taking a short break, then it swam very close. So I jumped on the water from the other side of the boat, then swam under the boat and the meeting was shorter than the fight ( about 1 h ).Fish is about 100lbs.

Re: Action in Costa Rica.

Roberto, Thank's for your kind feedback... and pretty honoured when it comes from one of the best and experienced world BW hunter!!

You're a lucky guy to live in such a beautiful island and to soak your "ass" all the year in BW.
I experienced some diving trip at 200/ 300 miles off the North Atlantic Coast but I never found BW...
I'll be again in Cuba (addicted) at the end of February and I'll do my best to share some SF experience...
In the BW there are not only pelagics... here a tripletail: in my opinion one of the best fish filet. Your opinion?

Re: Action in Costa Rica.

First day boat trip report:
I met 5 sailfish, shot one and missed.. but made pretty nice video of a couple of SF swimming around my (home made/ $ 20 flasher).
Here is the high season for TUNA.
After hours reseach found a huge spinner dolphin school, made about ten dives while trying to spot tuna, a little bigeye 50/80 lb shcool was swimming as usually like rockets.
Encoutered an other dolphin school swimming fast, made about 20 dives and finally at about 60 feet in front of the pack spotted YELLOWFIN TUNA 100/250lb size, about twelve.
As I was aiming one nasty boy, came on my left side at about 10 feet a magnifiscent 200lb white marlin!! I gave a glance to this incredible possible catch, then looked to the YFTuna so close to me, then to the the marlin wich was taking off ,shot and miss the marlin, tuna are far away among the dolphins... I'm gonna be a litle frustrated!
Back to the coast made some frededive with an about 15 feet manta ray wich was swimming close to the surface.
See you tomorrow!

Re: Action in Costa Rica.

Second day:
Met 2 sailfish and release (under 100 lbs).
In vain we spend several hours while looking for a tuna school... but not any on the horizon.
Despite the season, the sea water is offshore incredibily blue and visi++
Inshore water is dark green and full of jellyfish.
2 pics of a nice manta.
Tomorrow.

Re: Action in Costa Rica.

Third day:
Water is becoming pretty dirty inshore and offshore. So we had to sail at about 30 miles off the coast.
April on the Pacific coast of C.R.? this is not really the high season for fishing/ Sfishing. Dorado are rare, wahoo missing, sailfish stay all the year but marlins are becoming rare. Tuna should be somewhere...??
Met by chance a dolphin school and despite several exhausting dives in the school (they get used in swimming so fast) , I did'nt spot any TUNA.
Caught a SF wich gona be smoked.
Made a rare encounter: an about 400lb black marlin dead and drifting in the current! It seemed to have been injured/ bitten by a shark.
Back to the coast I freedove among about twelve giant mante ray in green water.
PURA VIDA!
Tomorrow.

Re: Action in Costa Rica.

Fourth day.
Only an half day boat trip (skipper sick).
First I spotted from the boat 3 sailfish swimming under the surface, I had to choose gun or video, after all I took the gun and met the three swimming like a squadron. They kept all the time their distance, I moved they moved/ I do'nt move they do'nt move, a dance wich lasts about one minute, then they took off and when a great pelagic takes off... Next timeI would choose my video...

Then Cpt decided to do trolling. The sea was like a mirror, water hot++ and at about 25 miles blue water everywhere.
He rose first a blue marlin, I jumped in the water and released the 100/150lb pelagic.
A few min. later and while we were eating "pinia" (pineapple), a black dorsal fin appeared on the surface on the portside, so I jumped to starbord in the water.
But at the time I jumped, the black marlin changed all at once his path and swam to starbord...(told me the Cpt)
While I was in the "soda" sea water and looking for the pelagic, the black marlin bumped into me/ skimming my thorax and at the same time it's caudal fin hit the gun. I first felt the power/ energy of the 400/ 500 lb fish swimming at top speed. Then I shot instinctivly in turning my head on the left side and in observing the completly black fish (except the white of the left eye which observed me). Shaft made a weird path ( something wrong in the gun after the collision?) Then the marlin disapeared in one second.
Back to the boat , the Cpt told me how the marlin headed on an other lure...

Pics:
A local spearo fishing 2 nice groupers ( Nassau) at about 60 feet.
A roosterfish taken early morning close to the beach at 3 feet depht (left hand) and his "colleague" taken at the same time by a fisherman in the right!

Re: Action in Costa Rica.

Since the marlin collision my tuna gun is unusable (trigger mechanism). Last day trip was again in blue water temp 34C deg.!
(we ate delicious conger sandwiches on the boat).
