Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
Fiberglass fins are most certainly real fins... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5lGgu00Qmk
If I'm not mistaken Martin set his 93 meters constant weight bi-fins world record with fiberglass fins. Form > all else. |

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
Worst case is I wasted my money and I will upgrade again.
I have been scuba for 18 years and freediving for about 10. Never been to the classes and dont know any "pros". I can dive pretty deep and have a decent breath hold 3 static and 2 dynamic. I dont think fins are going to make or break me but a good set would be beneficial! Got some decent fish today. 21 pound cubera and a decent cero. The fish are starting to show back up pretty thick here! |

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
mako fiberglass ,(spearmaster) are super durable!
I abused them for 2 years before someone stole them off the boat. The comfort comes from the foot pocket more than the blade. Problem is- most pockets want to come off the blade constantly. Certain brands are really bad with that. I had a pair of mares razor pockets on my mako blades and they are SOOO soft and comfortable but the tendons kept wanting to come off. I asked around and it's very common-( like 75% of the time common) Certain pockets will fit certain blades and not come off but according to the Dive -R guy- omer stingray pockets never coem off anything and don't even need to be glued. I believed him and bought them for my dive-r carbon blades and they fit really well and haven't shown signs of coming off yet. If you let the guys glue them in for you while they are new- you have better luck too I think. My buddy has some deep apneas with nemo pockets - that are just glued in and they are holding well for 6 months now. The last pair he had came off so many times it was ridiculous.- So let the store glue them in before they ever get wet or dirty and it may actually work for a while.

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
I have had bad experiences with fins breaking. Generally, don't be cheap but some brands don't seem to give any trouble. If anyone knows of anyone who has had real issues with Dive R, Moana, Deep Apnea or Bleu Tec let me know. Those are the blades I would generally consider if I'm spending money on something I wanna go more than 40 feet deep with ( and I am comfortable to 100 feet)

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
Impaler, I feel you on the mares razor foot pockets. I love them so much i have two pair. But the tendons do start to slip off a little to consistently. I fixed this by taking off the plastic clip at the end of the tendon and replacing it with a metal one that I cinched on there with a pair of pliers. Haven't had a problem since

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
nice- i did that too but then found a better way
I drilled a 1/16" hole through the blade and wrapped a piece of galvanized bailing wire around the tenon and through the blade and twisted it closed. It looked ghetto , but worked great.- I did it preventatively on all 4 tenons

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
Impaler, did you do that to fiberglass or carbon fins? And have you had any issues with cracking? I figure there's a lot of flex at that point of the fin.

It looks ghetto but it definately works. For me- it doesn't matter how comfy my pockets are- if they are gonna come off - that is a deal breaker for me. I find it incredibly dissapointing that these companies want so much money for their stuff - but they can't design a rail/interlock system that actually works most of the time? For me- I am just buying the omer stingray pockets- I don't care HOW sleek and comfy those small - glue in only foot pockets are- I won't use them because they come apart.

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
I have had a bad experience with a brand name fiberglass fin breaking on me at depth. It has really made me think about the durability of fiberglass fins as I have only used them for 15 or so dives before the break.

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
I am going to second what jason said
I have a pair of mako/spearmaster fiberglass and they are unbreakable I have them in the stingray pockets I know they are big , heavy and not probably high performance but they do not come apart and do not break I want to get a set of carbons or diveR's but can't bring myself to to buy new gear until my old gear fails |

Re: Fiberglass vs carbon fins
This is my second pair since the first one was stolen. I bought them barely used on October 2013. I mostly shore dive so I do walk a lot with them, as you can see there is a nice amount of sea urchins spines on the foot pockets. Like ny_er and jason said, they are unbreakable!
