Re: Big Barracuda shot in 80' under the wreck!

I think you could have played it safer.... Couple of things I would have done differently....

1. I definitely wouldn't shoot a reel at 80ft on a wreck. Float line would be my choice. So many things can go wrong on wrecks.....

2. You got dragged under the wreck... could have been disastrous had you gotten caught in the shooting line with that barracuda ripping away. He looked like he had a good bit of energy and the stone shot that was hoped for was not realized. I'm assuming you didn't eat the cuda for fear of ciguatera. Not a fish I'd risk a shot for..

3. You said you hit your head.... not a good thing at 80ft...

4. I don't believe in "pushing it". You have to take very calculated risks.

I know it sounds like I'm giving you grief but I rather you be alive and think your dives out better. I know I'll catch hell for what I'm writing but so be it.

Dive safe.

Peace,

Errol

P.S. Make sure to tell your buddy to take his snorkel out of his mouth on his dives... It will help in case of a shallow water blackout.

I agree 100% Errol. No fish is worth your life and especially not a barracuda.

Re: Big Barracuda shot in 80' under the wreck!

Guru, you are 100 % right.
Are driver an old spanish guy eats them, so I aim to get 1 for him when he comes, The last fish i expected to be under that wreck was a barracuda but I am a firm believer in ya never know! Definitely should have used a float line but i have alot of reel line so sometimes I risk it... I hit my shoulder/backside but regardless yea a lot could have been done for a safer dive. I learned many things that dive and with your advice I will dive safer!
Thanks again for the comments guys

Errol,

A lot of people use reels on deep wrecks. You just cant have the standard Rob Allen reel that holds 50m. It is not enough for deep stuff. All I use is reels and I shoot deeper wrecks.

I do agree with you about not shooting that fish. Taking a shot at a Cuda is not worth it especially being so close to the wreck. I would hate to lose my shaft or go back down there and untangle a mess to get my shaft back.

manto465,

How do you like that offset double flopper shaft? I've seen them before in videos and think they make more sense, I've just never used one. Is the accuracy the same or better?

Re: Big Barracuda shot in 80' under the wreck!

I don't think accuracy has anything to do with it... it's about landing the fish and it definitely works..
