Florida sales tax

FYI if your buying a used boat in the state of Fl and are going to register it in Fl itemize a bill of sale boat x# of dollars for the hull ,x# dollars for the out board motor ,x# of dollars for the trailer . There is a law in Fl and you can find on the Fl vehicle reg. site that states with a itemized bill of sale on a vessel with a OB motor you are not required to pay sales tax on the motor only the hull and trailer, you will get an argument out of the clerk at agency or not but it is the law.
My wife found the law and I did the itemized bill of sale on a key west 15000 on the hull, trailer 2500 and motor 7500 and paid sales tax on 17500. The agent said she had never heard of it, but luckily the supervisor had.
Hope this helps someone same some money.

Re: Florida sales tax

I thought this was common knowledge. There is another about registering boat after six months from sale date, there should be no sales tax due at all. I will try to look it up, great for project boats that can't be used immediately

Re: Florida sales tax

my tax clerk actualy told me about this and said if I supplied them a itemized repiet icould save the extra money. Wich was great being 60% of my boats worth is the motor.
Which also sucks now that im selling it. everyone just sees the boat and the price and dont think about what motor it has and what that is worth.

Man-o-war, did u ever find out anything abut the 6-month rule? I remember when I moved here from the great white north, I brought a new car and got stuck paying the differnece in sales tax from Michigan to Florida as the car was less than 6 months old. Maybe its the same thing...

Re: Florida sales tax

I thought most of knew about this as well. For those that don't the specifics are below. Doesn't work with "Dealers" or I/O's. I always have line on the detailed bill of sale for electronics, equipment, motor, trailer and anything else significant in the transaction.

TL-08 section II, C, 14 (page 6)

http://www.tc.citrus.fl.us/tl-08.pdf

14. An exception to the payment of non-exempted sales tax on a complete vessel rig may be made if the applicant furnishes a properly executed itemized bill of sale which separately describes and itemizes (prices) all items including the vessel, outboard motor and trailer. In such instances, only the vessel and
trailer will be subject to the payment of sales tax.

It helps to take this in with you sometimes!

Re: Florida sales tax

I always tell the lady at the tag agency that I traded for it and the value was $100. I never have the seller fill in the selling price on the title.
