Re: Sea cucumber recipe?
Sea cucumbers are rich in certain nutrients that make them a great addition to any salad. Just chop them up like regular cucumbers but add a little salt which makes them shrivel up to the texture of actual cucumbers annnnd I don't know WTH I'm talking about... Good luck, should be an interesting thread.
Can you deep fry a jellyfish? Spread it on peanut butter?

Re: Sea cucumber recipe?
Lots of people must be eating them...or maybe cattle feed?
Do an internet search and get back to us if they are any good. Here is a past post on this site that may be of interest: http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=198212 |

Re: Sea cucumber recipe?
They are prized in Asia, but are not particularly flavoursome on their own, instead they act as a carrier for other flavours infused in them. Much like pasta is eaten for the sauces and fillings that are combined with it. Some sea cucumber species are poisonous and some exude a toxic substance, so you need to know which ones are suitable to eat. The harder something is to find and the more exotic it is then Chinese seemingly want to eat it, so that is the biggest market for them. I will stick to fish and shellfish and lobsters, plus sea cucumbers often look like turds released from a non-treated ocean outfall.
Once at a Chinese restaurant I was with a group that mainly consisted of Chinese co-workers and we were there for a special banquet. There were ooh’s and aah’s as each weirdo dish was laid out, but I was desperate to find something to eat as nothing was recognisable, including a bowl of fine glassy clear filaments heaped up in a thin dark brown sauce. That was the jellyfish! When I enquired why they wanted to eat this stuff I was told that they did not eat these dishes all the time, but only on special occasions. I said that I was very glad to hear that. I eventually found some chicken, but I passed on the glossy ruby red chicken’s feet which were noisily devoured with the spitting out of small bones into bowls. Now I think about it, I am pretty sure there was a sea cucumber recipe in Skin Diver magazine back in the early seventies. My recollection is you split them open and cut the long longitudinal muscle fiber strips out of them which mobilized their tubular bodies and dried it before using the stuff. I never tried it, plus there was one for kelp candy which involved a lot of sugar being added. Last edited by popgun pete; 02-21-2020 at 12:22 AM. |

Re: Sea cucumber recipe?
Chicken feet are pretty good fried. I understand some people remove the bones before frying.

Re: Sea cucumber recipe?
In my country they give you chicken feet broth when you get dengue. They're loaded in collagen.

Re: Sea cucumber recipe?
Yes, eating other parts of the chicken like livers and guts and the legs and feet are just a con job to use up all the scraps. One of my associates was an honoured guest at a Chinese banquet in China, he was told that they always gave the important guests something special. As he stirred his soup when they served the first course a chicken's head bobbed to the surface.
