RIP Dima

Another brother perished last March while spearing alone, diving on the deep walls in Siquijor, the Philippines, without a float.

http://www.philstar.com/region/2014/...rowns-siquijor

Dima was 28, and never has posted on this forum. I dived with him in those waters in January in a group, in March Dima went to Siquijor alone…
He was a competitive freediver, could easily swim DYF over 100m mark and dive as deep as 45m. He attended the course led by the world champion freediver.

Apparently, according to the log from his dive computer he made to the surface after his fatal last dive, fell unconscious and most probably took water into his lungs while on the surface to later descend onto the shallow ridge. According to the computer he spent almost 6min on the surface and if accompanied by a dive buddy most probably would have been with us now.
His dive computer profile as grim reminder to never ever dive alone..

Re: RIP Dima

So sad. So unnecessary. May his family find peace. Wish he had an FRV on.

Re: RIP Dima

So sad that these tragedies have to remind us of how basic safety is often overlooked. Dive safe. RIP

Re: RIP Dima

28 years old and gone...This is so sad. And for what? RIP and may his passing encourage others to be more moderate in their diving.

It seems that so often training, and taking classes to unlock our potential, leads to this end. Im sure the chorus of "if only he had a dive buddy along" will by voiced by many, but despite this being taught protocol the corpses keep coming.

Why should anyone teach this kind of diving, when we have seen that it so often results in the methods learned being applied in conditions or circumstances that lead to death? Why as a community do we still embrace and lionize this practice of deep deadly diving?

Re: RIP Dima

VERY,VERY, VERY, sad and unnecessary.

Almost all freediving / spearfishing injuries and deaths are preventable... but all he needed was a safety / buddy.

RIP and I know that he peacefully blacked out and felt no pain...

Sad! All he really needed was a "good" dive buddy, he would not have inflated a FRV if he only blacked out on the surface.
Good dive buddy means within arms reach of your dive partner when he surfaces. Being in the water with him 50 yards away is not a dive buddy, it's just someone diving in the same area who can retrieve your lifeless body.

You are mistaken about this. With the "surface minder" option turned on, if you reach the surface, and do not push the button once 15 seconds has elapsed, (because you are blacked out on the surface) within 15 more seconds the vest will consider you blacked out on the surface and inflate, rolling you to a face up position.

Dima could have been saved had he had an FRV and programmed it properly. He would have awakened face up once he started breathing again.

THE FRV IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A DIVE BUDDY, but, it can save you if you happen not to be being watched on that dive due to buddy distraction, etc.

x2

A buddy could have saved him, as well as an FRV with the surf option on.

So sad to see this happen. RIP.
