Catalina Lobster

Hey SB,

So I've been fishing socal coast basically all my life but have not much experience with spearfishing/lobster. I will be spending a week at avalon when I come home for Christmas leave. Where would you guys recommend for lobster? I will on a hobie outback so I will have access to anywhere within 5 miles of Avalon. I will be scuba diving with my brother (advanced and rescue divers). Also, Kind of a random question but where is my best bet for cabs? how deep?

Re: Catalina Lobster

Well the cabs are a lot different at the island. They're mostly golf carts.

OP; cabezon tend to be pretty shallow at Cat; look within the 3' to 15' depth. Not many cabs there to speak of.
As to bugs close to Avalon; the east end quarry has lobster, and west of Avalon to the Hen rock area are some reefs which do hold bugs.

Actually few and far between 35-100ft. deep. I have never seen one personally beyond 80ft. Then again, When I would dive into triple digits, I really was not all that interested in hole hunting. (Stick a fish in there, and you might just die trying to retrieve it.) Yes, look for areas which at night when bug hunting you see lots of octopus. In shallow, and check those areas more frequently for cabezons. Also, look for small abalone shells which are very clean. Cabs suck them off the rocks and crap out the shells rather quickly.

It gives you some areas in which to look.

You can find them very shallow. I took a nice 10 pounder at Cat in maybe 7 feet of water. He was about 5 feet back in a crack.
