Look what I found while out hunting g deer

I was hunting last week for deer in D16 and kept seeing these. After a while it dawned on me what they were. They were chicken of the woods mushrooms. Now I have never picked wild mushrooms before but I have also been doing alot of reading on wild survival and realized they were edible. I thought how many times have I hunted this area and diddnt realize they were edible. Well I picked a bunch and sent them to a friend who studied mushrooms so I can double verify they were safe to eat. Got the ok to eat them and made a nice sauté mushrooms with pasta. Tomorrow I will make the rest for the kids.

Careful with those. Looks like that one's on an oak, but the ones on eucalyptus are actually genetically distinct, and some people get bad reactions, especially when mixed with alcohol. Although it's much less common, some people are allergic to the oak ones as well. A friend of mine got hives after eating one I cooked.

I would never eat anything growing from Eucalyptus trees, those things are poisonous. We ate them and are all fine, I did get a bit of gas but no nausea or anything severe.

I see, what I think are those, almost every time in the woods. I didn't think those were edible? I try and take a picture to compare. There some right next to one of my tree stands. I'm heading out for a few days in the woods in a few hours.

Thanks for the info. I had some that looked identical to those from a studious glance. They were growing on some rotted logs in my backyard. I wasn't sure enough so I didn't mess w/ them. They really have to be scrutinized heavily.

I've been thinking about getting into Mushroom hunting. I've got a small backyard also but I've even been thinking about trying to grow some.
