Key West, Finz Charters report
Dove with Finz on the 15th and 16th. Even though I was solo they took me out on their 34' Freeman which is new as of last year. To write that the boat was awesome would be an understatement. The 2nd day we had solid 3-4' seas and still made great time to the dive spot.
Both days we hit morning spots in the 60-80ft range with shallower second dives. The crew they employ are young but professional. It was nice having someone that could focus on killing lionfish while I focused elsewhere. Surprisingly I didn't find these spots in the atlantic to be as fishy generally as what I find in the gulf out of Tampa area. There are definitely a different cast of characters though with lionfish being prodigious. The area does supply some better sizes of fish vs my experience in the gulf particularly with having legal sized red grouper. A 35" black and 25" red grouper were the highlights of my trip but I also filled my cooler with a mix of mutton, mangoes, triggerfish, and lionfish. First time making lionfish ceviche which was a hit with my group of non-diving friends. |
