Re: having trouble with bands

Bill, I have to hand it to you and all of your Cali friends. You folks certainly know about everything there is to know about band tying. And of course, you have all of the requisite tools and materials too. I love reading all of the posts and viewing the descriptive pictures accompanying them. Keep them coming.
If I lived close to you, I would certainly make it a point to get with you for some first-hand lessons. And afterwards, we could go shoot some
WSB.

I also use stainless steel safety wire. It seems easier and quicker to me. For some reason, it seems like it is old school and the freedivers, especially like to hand tie using "string". The steel wire can present a problem if the end comes up and then it can scratch you badly, but it is infrequent and can be fixed in a moment with pliers.

Also, the wire is very easy to remove (again with pliers) if someone wants to shorten the band or cut the last 1/2 inch off that is showing the most wear.

If you spend about $10-12 for a spool of SS aircraft safety wire and $15 for a cheap pair of jet twister pliers at harbour freight, you are set for making hundreds of bands. You can also use a small pair of vice grips (instead of the specially designed twister pliers) and these will only add about 30 seconds to the tie process.

I have always wondered why I never seem to see pictures of it on spearboard.

Maybe, I will do something about it, but it won't be as pretty as Bill's work.

Bulit, jf, I'm a little surprised that monel doesn't break. I thought about using stainless seizing wire. Heck, I even have an aircraft wire twist tool but never got around to using it on bands. Might be fun to play with.

Re: having trouble with bands

You can twist it clear through the band and cut it in two! Works well.

Who needs pretty? I wanna try this method and see how it works out. I'm a little concerned though about the metal being so tough on the rubber.. That it will cut all the way through the band (like "Built" stated it could do) with all the pressure you need to keep the wishbones from popping out.

Do you beleive with this method that you have to change bands more frequently due to the tearing from the SS wire? (Compared to bands that are string tied..?)

If you or "Built" could post pictures of the step process or even the final result of the finished band I'd appreciate it. It's pretty interesting to me considering I've never heard of this method before and wanna give it a shot. Thanks a lot.

I gotta see this stainless steel band tying done. I've been doing it with string, but the SS intrigues me. Post some pics!

Its so damn easy to tie bands with twine, and I don't think I want wire in my hands.

K, got the pics and will post tonight.

No, it is not hard on the bands. Just don't tighten it more than needed. Keep twisting and snap! cuts right through.

Hang loose!!
