Re: SKOGSTA, the Ikea speargun…1st build, few tools—
Next I carved out 3 slots on the muzzle.
Because I had to glue up 2 short pieces of wood and have zero trust in the strength of the bond (not least because the contact surface is less than perfect due to my work) I had decided early on that I would have no choice but to add a 3rd piece as structural support. When the 3rd piece will be glued to the initial section the slots I am carving will be at the perfect place to help attach a flashlight to the gun. |

Then I started the handle. I think Ric F. wrote somewhere that true men carve their own handles
because it's a very organic shape it was a lot more fun that other parts of the build, more like sculpture. I started out by getting the angle from the only other speargun I have, then cut the same angle twice on one of the IKEA bench feet. Then glued them all out. |

Roughly at the same time I ripped that 3rd piece of wood so that the gun would be slightly less bulky (it's still going to be terribly bulky...)
The last picture shows the gun so far. |

Back to the handle. When I had drawn the handle I forgot to take into account roughly 1/2 inch would be housed inside the gun so had to offset the profile of the handle a bit.
I think I also had a slight angle issue so ripped a small piece off. Then I started making a dovetail (my first!) |

In parallel I started shaping the butt of the speargun to be able to house the handle

Finishing the handle, nothing special, cut the profil and then started contouring and giving some 3d feel to it. I am a lefty by the way .
My only regret here is that I should have made it narrower, it's a little large for my hands. I can adress that one day if I have the courage but for now it will do! |

The dovetail section, while not perfect was suprisingly snug and really solid.

I refined a few things here and there. I wanted a few minor details on the main part around the handle, and shaped one end of the 3rd piece of wood

Next I started on the flashlight housing.
I had ordered a Mako flashlight, reported the profile on the 3rd piece of wood and chiseled away. I quickly realized I would never achieved the desired roundness so I turned my drill into a dremel tool and built a wooden cylinder the right size that could hold sand paper for me to sand the right shape. Meet my little helper! |

At that point the gun looks like this.
I need to go... I'll try to post again tomorrow! |

Re: SKOGSTA, the Ikea speargun…1st build, few tools—
OK I'm back! The next steps where to glue the handle in place and apply epoxy layers to the slots I made earlier as they will out of reach once I glue the 3rd piece of wood
At that stage I also moved the project to the bathroom to get higher temps than in the garage but that came with its own set of logistical challenges of cleaning up every night. The biggest difficulty and learning in this project for me was not having a dedicated space to do this build and therefore I was constantly rushing before I needed to evacuate the place! |

Then I finally glued the 3rd part, this time with epoxy.
When I had cut out the 3rd part I had kept the opposite piece of scrap and used it with the clamps to have a straight contact surface At this stage the gun is pretty close to its final shape and you can clearly see the 3 slots that will be used to hold the flashlight |

Re: SKOGSTA, the Ikea speargun…1st build, few tools—
Next I drilled the remaining holes, namely the one to pass a lanyard and the one for line anchor.
It's worth explaining a little my thought process here for the line anchor. My original intention was to try to come up with a design that keep things as simple as possible and minimize number of parts I had to build or buy. So when thinking about rigging the line I thought I could avoid a line anchor by drilling trough the muzzle and attaching the line. I also wanted to avoid a swivel if possible and came up with the idea of a stopper knot rather than tying the line to the muzzle. It will not be as effective as a swivel but if the line does get tangled up the stopper knot does have some freedom to rotate and self-untangle. I recessed the hole slightly so that the stopper knot is housed inside the muzzle. It also makes for a very clean look on the gun, I'm sure some builders could take this idea to the pro level! |

Re: SKOGSTA, the Ikea speargun…1st build, few tools—
Next since I'm paranoid about the whole thing exploding in my face I decided to add screws to the bottom piece. ugly but effective. Had to be careful about no sinking them too deep as the track on the upper part of the gun isn't that far away

Re: SKOGSTA, the Ikea speargun…1st build, few tools—
Used my orbital sander for about 10mn in the whole project as they was a lot of epoxy that had squeezed out when I did the glue up
+ some detail work |
