My First Custom Build - From a pile of old logs to a beautiful gun

Photos aren't uploading on the site for some reason so heres a short video of my first test shots: https://youtu.be/Bico-Idg_4Y

This was my first custom gun build and I'm super happy with how it turned out. It was made from a pile of old fence posts behind the barn on my family's farm. The wood used is Black Locust and Red Cedar. I know cedar isn't a typical speargun wood but considering that it is only 10% less hard than teak and 100% more beautiful, I figured with a healthy balance of black locust (~50% harder than teak) it would work out. I took this project from a pile of logs to a finished work of art (in my humble opinion ). It isn't perfect but for my first custom build I'm thrilled with it! Now if the weather will cooperate I'll hopefully get to pull the trigger on some amberjack before the end of the season. If anyone is interested in seeing more of the building process let me know. I photographed the whole thing beginning to end, but having trouble uploading on this site .

Anyway let me know your thoughts!

-Henri

I agree that the appearance is definitely more striking than teak wood.

I notice that the speargun as a whole is positively buoyant. Is that the case with most commercially available spearguns?

It sinks slightly when fully loaded and banded, then after the shot, it floats without the shaft. That's typically what you want in a speargun, especially for freediving, Most commercially made guns will behave the same. For scuba it isn't as good.

Thanks! Yeah I've never used dyneema for a shooting line and I had no idea it was so thick. Not really liking it, I may switch to something else.

The first time I watched the video was at work so I had the sound off. Rewatching it, some good taste in music you have there, sir.

Nice. I like how you made the handle. Handle a little wide maybe?

Yeah it may be a just bit wide. It came from the end of the blank I cut off so it started off super thick. The real problem is I mounted the handle too far back and I can barely reach the trigger, but it works at least.

try shrinking your pics before loading them into sb. for pc - right click while the pic is open - click paint - then re size the pics @ 40% - then x out - it will ask you if you want changes permanent - click yes- then you can go on sb - and load them
i hope that makes sense and i hope you dont have mac
