Re: Bottom Finder Pics

Dan, those pics prove there are still big fish around. Got any big fish pics from 90'-140'?

Not on last trip. Trying to avoid the Red Tide. Shallowest was 155'. Here's a shot of a small wreckage pile in 165'.

Everyone that knows knows that there is no natural bottom from 110' out to 150', lots of bottom inside of that and even more outside of 150'. Back in the spring we were coming in from AJ/Snowy fishing barely on a plane while gutting fish and I happened to walk by the machine, we had just crossed a 4' break out in the middle of nowhere! I of course spun the boat and got a solid # on it. Finally got back to it a couple weeks ago and needless to say it is going to be a fun place to fish. We couldn't put a greenie on the bottom without a 18" seabass eating it. BTW, the bottom is 127' and it comes up to 123' the 115' is marking the top of the seabass knot.
The search for natural bottom continues. Pulled up on this the day after writing the above post, found perfect conditions to dive. Blue water and half knot N current. We got a mark on it that came up 40' off the bottom but only right on the number. I kinda figured at that point it had to made of metal. Suit up and vince drops me in 25 numbers south of it for good measure. Hit bottom and find smooth sand/hardpan. Now I know I am about to see artificial. Sea bass and baby ARS come out to meet me. I let the float pull me north and I spot a piece of shrimp net laying on the bottom. As I am swimming up to it about 30' north I make out more structure. I swam up to would I would be is a FAD anchor from the sailfish guys. Four steel semi wheels stacked side by side and welded together with rebar. Had 1000lb stainless cable bridled up to thick rode that I would guess was torn off by the shrimper found it the hard way. They were resting in a small washout sitting on shell bed so I don't think they will be sinking away anytime soon. Only disappointment was the lack of anything with size. Only big seabass, 10" ARS, few beeliners, and 400 big spadefish making the huge mark on the machine. Overall lots of life but maybe when the gags around still around in the spring it will have a few hanging around or big ARS showing up from time to time.

Nice image on a wintry weather day Dan.

Is that 15-20 feet of relief there?

The shallow water is on fire, lots of everything! Water temps off Hudson are around 64 degrees, viz was 30 feet in 60 feet.

These were from the west coast of Kodiak AK a couple years ago. And there are people who spear fish there.

Re: Bottom Finder Pics

Great idea for a thread Dan ,,,,, i just never thought to take a pic of the bottom machine since it usually lies to me. But while fishing a couple weeks ago, I snapped a few that made me very happy..
These are Rock fish (striped bass) on Fenwick Shoal Delaware. As you can see i had no erg to jump in after them,, settled for a nice white bucktail on a Penn 5500. It was a screwed up season this year with fish very hard to find.. This was my ninth day out looking for them,, and these fish were outside the 3 mile Fed. limit ,, couldn't even keep any ...... I through in a pic of some snow & ice too,,, I shoveled snow off the boat twice to make the trip fishing.
nuts uh ?
