Apnea/Reflex training - no water?

Hey guys,

Random question about triggering the diving response for breath hold training. I understand that 'put your face in cold water,' assists in the practice of apnea and achieving the response we're all going for. But, it's still having your face in water and freak accidents can occur (especially bad when training alone). So, for anyone more in the know than me, is there a way to simulate the response without using the water? My thought was to really soak a wash cloth and put it in the freezer for 20 or 30 minutes prior to a training session and drape it on your face for the attempts.

Note - please no one accidentally waterboard yourself.

Anyone know if this would elicit the appropriate response physiologically?

Thanks
-LaS

You should get fairly similar results in static without facial immersion. Bit less of a dive response than you'd have in the water, but that doesn't matter for static nearly as much as it does in the other disciplines. Static is largely a brute force O2 storage vs. body mass equation.

That's not true. Your body does not enter the diving response, more specifically, bradycardia if your face is not in contact with cold water.

Blow a fan on your face ,if the air velocity /pressure is high enuff, you will instantly ,feel difficulty breathing same as if your face is in water .

Elevated CO2, lowered blood O2, flowing warm water on the face, state of the stretch receptors in diaphram can all be triggers. Cold water + breathhold works to some degree for pretty much anyone, regardless of prior training.
