Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Passing through the area on Wed 12/21 and hoping to grab a dive. I've been thinking PSL/Shell Beach, but I'm open to suggestions for anywhere between Big Sur and Shell Beach depending on conditions. How are things looking lately. Flying solo, so I'm also looking for a buddy. Will have my kayak. I can reciprocate with some So. Cal shorediving or a sail out to the Islands. Thanks!-Mike

We did have a pretty narrow dive window this last week (Monday-Wednesday), but it turned bad on Thursday with the storm. Next week's forecast does not look too promising: A 3- to 5-foot northwesterly (300-degree, deep-water) swell (with a 20- to 22-second period) will arrive along our coastline on Monday, increasing to 4 to 6 feet (with an 18-24-second period) on Tuesday. 8 to 10 feet (with an 18- to 20-second period) on Wednesday into Thursday, increasing to 10 to 12 feet (with 15- to 17-second period) by next Friday.

8-10'@20? There's no power there, pfft! Yeah, maybe I'll pass on that. How does vis on the inside of the PSL breakwall hold up in situations like that? Thanks for the intel.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Best bet in those swells up here would be inside Morro Bay.

Vis will be shit soup... Avila isn't notorious for being great vis even when calm.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

...and then it gets even bigger.

SEA/SWELL:

Today's 3- to 5-foot northwesterly (300-degree, deep-water)
swell (with a 14- to 21-second period) will increase to 4 to
6 feet
(with an 18- to 24-second period) Tuesday.

This swell will further build to 8 to 10 feet (with an 18-
to 20-second
period) Wednesday. This northwesterly swell
will remain at this height but (with a 15- to 17-second
period) on Thursday into Friday.

Gale-force northwesterly winds along the California coastline
will produce a 10- to 12-foot northwesterly (300-degree, deep-
water) sea and swell (with 5- to 15-second period) Saturday,
decreasing to 4 to 6 feet (with a 7- to 12-second period) on
Sunday.

Increasing southerly winds will generate 7- to 9-foot
(190-degree, shallow-water) seas next Monday, followed by
increasing westerly swell next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Good time to get your dive gear serviced.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Dove Cambria today. Looked pretty crappy from shore but at the 40' contour there was 8' vis on the surface and 12' vis on the bottom. Water was 52 and not very fishy were I dove but I managed to to get what I was after. There was a little chop on top and light surge between rocks. Humpback whales were breaching at the 50' contour and I don't think that will ever cease to be impressive up close. Entry and exit were a little sketchy with today's swell but it was worth it to get wet again.

Swell and wind was up yesterday so we pushed off the dive another weekend. Here's a pic of spooners cove on Friday when we went but didn't bring gear. Hope to get a day like this again soon.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Couple of nice days over the last couple of weeks and fairly calm water around Pismo pier. Pirates looked like a lake this morning with zero wind. Any SLO divers getting in locally?
