New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

Here is the new Riffe Gopro mount for the Mantis mask. I just got one and have to say it's pretty nice. It comes with a new replacement screw. All you do is take the original screw out on top of the mask and put it on and tighten. It did not come with acorn nut but no big deal. I have plenty of those in adapters I will never use. I just took one out of a adapter that came with the camera. This is the perfect mount for the perfect mask!

I got this at Austins dive shop in Miami.

Re: New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

I bought mine at the blue wild from Austins a couple weeks ago strictly for the reason of the go pro mount. The mask is super comfortable since I have a larger face with no leaks. I got the mirrored version. I have a gopro 3+ and the reduced weight (compared to my old hero 2) makes a big difference. Wearing the mask with the camera on it I don't even feel it.

Well it will be a little bit before I can test it out in the pool
but can tell you that this is a fantastic mask. The mount
just fits right like a glove. No drilling and no modifying your
mask. If anyone tests this out, please post!

Re: New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

I have a Mantis LV (low volume) and have struggled with creating a lasting gopro mount for a couple years now. When I saw the new mount I figured I would give it a try, even though it is made specifically for the Mantis masks, not the LV.

I could not use the stock screw in the mount kit. I used a 1" #4-40 bolt and nut and a dremel to take off the excess bolt length. The bigger job was using a heat gun on the mount itself to mold it to the mask shape of the LV.

Because my different tries had eroded the frame of the mask to nearly nothing at the nose bridge, I went ahead and locked everything in with JB Weld eliminating the possibility of removing the mount if I wasn't filming.

I've since used it in the pool, but haven't dove or put much resistance on it. Swimming hasn't been a problem in the past, it's the manipulation of the camera that has caused my previous mounts to fail. Pushing the buttons on the camera has created a transverse (perpendicular) stress on my other mounts and pulled them away from the frame. With this mount having a large part spreading the stress across the top of the frame and not entirely on the joint, I don't expect to have any problems.
Sorry for the jargon. In short, Riffe made a good product. It will work well. For anyone with a Mantis, even LV, this is a great solution for a mask mount.

Re: New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

Thanks for the heads up Dean. I sent a message and didn't hear back and decided to go the diy route. The information is good for others considering their options.

Happy hunting.

Re: New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

Dean 0521 - Do you have the Mantis or Mantis 5? I recently picked up the Mantis and then realized it's not a low volume mask when i reached 40'+ and it if felt like my eyes were going to blow out of my head. I could push air into the mask through my nose but I don't want to have to do that on every dive. I know on riffe's site they say that the Mantis 5 has a low volume skirt but does that make it a low volume mask? Just curious what your experience is taking the mask to 50'+. I really like the new GoPro mount so i'd like to pick it up but if it's not really a low volume mask then no point. Thanks man.

Is there any noticeable difference in weight when under water?

Re: New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

I have the Mantis 5, I used it down in the Bahamas. Not bad but this was my first time using it and did not go very deep. It did seemed to work good.

Re: New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

IMHO Riffe has the easiest masks to modify yourself because of the screw post above the nose bridge. Here's a video of my modification.

Re: New Gopro Mount For Riffe Mantis Mask.

I used some construction grade epoxy to attach the right amount to my mako mini mask, and put in a piece 200 pound mono in case the glue joint fails, at least the camera will still be attached to the strap of a mask it's held up through about six dive sessions so far
