Yes it's not loaded but just like all the cat sea trial videos, they aren't either. You are making assumptions but at least this guy puts his #s in the video. All other claims are pure spectulation.

Before my cat I owned a 23' Bull Dolphin that nearly caused my divorce. I could not get my wife on the mono hull unless it was flat ass calm.
Now she loves goin on the cat.

Once u go Cat, u never go back!
Are you sure about those #s? I am very familiar with your motors as far as gallons per hour and proping. What pitch are you running as I am having a very hard time making the math work with the speeds you are claiming. That is unless cat hulls are allowing the laws of physics and hydodynamics to be broken in a parallel universe.

Re: Cat vs Mono - Revive the debate

cats are better, all the racing sailboats and commercial ferrys are turning toward cats. In Rhode island 10 years ago there were 2 slow monohull ferries to Block Island. Now they added 3 catamarans that get there in half the time and use less fuel.

Whats there not to understand?

I totally agree. But folks are just too used mph/mpg.

Re: Cat vs Mono - Revive the debate

Andrew K and I went to the Tortugas in a 27 world cat. We cruised at 31kts in 2-4ft seas mixed with those big ones out of no where. Every boat and i mean EVERY boat did the vrroom CRASH vroom CRASH vroom CRASH with every wave. Just getting beat to hell. We cruised by like we on a cushion of air. It was amazing. Now i will say, that on the rare hull smack we got (at least half a dozen) it wasn't easy...The new cats are super silky and smooth, but many of the older cats like keys-divers are still a very very nice ride. Fairly certain the Helldivers he got it from seemed to think so as well.

Re: Cat vs Mono - Revive the debate

Problem with almost all these cats is they make the bridges too low. I went out on someones 24" cat here in CA one time and in 2-3' chop the bridge was pounding so hard I thought the boat was going to break in half.
If you have a shitload of bridge clearance and can actually run completely balls out in the slop and have those two hulls just cutting like knives through the water and not have to much water smashing into the bridge you have something
We have made powercats out of sailboat hulls and they are amazing for under 20ft boats and over a full foot of bridge clearance at the rear beam

Re: Cat vs Mono - Revive the debate

I agree about the bridge clearance. I had a 1969 57'*12' that I got out of a landfill 4yrs ago. It was a houseboat with a forward upper wheelhouse. I cut 2/3rds of the structure off and had a landing craft looking ride. I installed twin 440 yanmars which got it up to 28kt. She squatted close to the water and when waves hit underneath it felt like I was sitting on top of Mike Tysons punching bag.
I got rid of it on Ebay.

That said this is a radically different cat with an incredible amount of horsepower put on a hull that is less than 23.5 feet long at the waterline. I believe the hp to weight ratio combined with brand new cutting edge 4 stroke technology plays a way bigger factor in the fuel economy than whether its a cat or a mono. Give me a quarter of a million dollars and I will get you the same #s in a pontoon boat.

Hey, where are all the Panga guys? Those things can cross the Atlantic on 6 gallons of gas during a hurricane. I won’t even get started on RIBs…

Re: Cat vs Mono - Revive the debate

Cat owners know they are weight sensitive and monos can be too. The problem with cats are that the ride and stability are compremised under weighted load where as monos are pretty forgiving and only punish you with reduced fuel economy. If you load a cat to the point it starts to hull sneeze and bang, your oppinions of how great they are will change.

None taken but I'm pretty sure you can still buy most of them new. Just like mono hulls, there are great ones and terrible ones. Maybe the new ones are made by magical elves laminating the cat hulls with unicorn pee. All I can tell you is that on my way out and in from where I spearfish (usually 120 nautical round trip) I pass a lot of big cat boats throwing big rooster tails and moving up and down in the seas. If I am making a 30 knot cruise they usually disapear behind me in short order. Friendly folks though that always wave.

There is one cat though out of Cedar Key that has passed me a couple of times running 40+ knots but it's a power cat hull that resembles a skater. Nothing like I've been on but its an older hull, maybe mid 90s power.
