Re: New Zealand

There's one charter operator in The Coromandel offering spearo trips off the kayak. His name is Rob and he's been diving for quite a while, so really know his way around: http://kayakadventures.co.nz/
If you manage to get to the Great Barrier Islands you'll be blown away…*

I'm in Sydney (East Coast) but moving to Perth (West) for 2016.
In NSW you need a licence to fish & size & bag limits are here:
http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/...al/regulations

Most headlands are ok for a feed of fish & can hold great fish if your there at the right time. There are small areas with marine reserves so double check before you dive. I am happy to pass on some of my preferred Sydney rock hops if you want to PM me. You should find buddies to dive with on some of the local forums & facebook is pretty useful I imagine (its not for me) but you could also contact clubs (there are a few in Sydney & others up & down the coast). Obviously they would be good places to look for a boat ride also.

Just a quick post but ask more especially if your heading to Sydney area

Re: New Zealand

The secret steps to finding kingfish in northern NZ are:

1. find a point with current
2. swim/drive/walk there
3. look underwater

Failure to execute any one of those steps reduces your likelihood of success by at least a couple of percent. Maybe make a list of the main species and try to knock them all off? Would ensure you got around a range of locations / habitats.

kingfish
snapper
butterfish
kahawai
trevally
koheru
blue maomao
pink maomao
giant boarfish
john dory
terakihi
golden snapper
blue moki

Should be able to account for all those in a couple of good days at the Mercury Islands / Great Barrier / Bay of Islands.

Re: New Zealand

If you can arrange a trip to the Three Kings that's the biggest baddest place in the country really. Remote, huge kings / trevally and if you spend time looking for marlin you'll probably find one (there was a spate of marlin killings a few years back when everybody realised that trolling hookless worked really well) and it'll probably be big by world stripey standards. Big currents and exposed to the weather.

Re: New Zealand

Google oceandiversity whangarei. This is the only dedicated spearo charter in NZ near Auckland I know. Blair, the operator, knows his business and bring you on those One Fish yellowtails.
