Experimenting with wood reels.
Made this from a block of black walnut just to see how I liked it. It isn't finished, need to make a knob for reeling and one or two more pieces of hardware but it actually spins really well. The brake I made for it locks the reel down nice and tight. I think it could be fun to make some nice looking wood reels for different guns. Should be fine for smaller guns on reefs/rigs. I don't think I'd stick a doggie or a wahoo with one though haha.
Photo wasn't working at first maybe I fixed it now. Last edited by Hpwatson; 05-24-2019 at 12:42 PM. Reason: Photo not working |

Re: Experimenting with wood reels.
In the old days fishing reels for surf fishing were all turned from wood and today are eagerly sought by collectors. Wood was then plentiful in terms of quality timber in large blocks and lengths, but now has become much harder to find as the best stuff was chopped down and used up over the centuries. For example to now restore the burnt out Notre Dame Cathedral the entire planet will have to be searched for the massive timbers required for the new roofing frame which must duplicate the original in every feature and construction detail.
Great job on the reel! An example of an old timber reel https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-...kAAOSwEo1cYd1H Check the price! https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ALVEY-LA...4383.l4275.c10 Last edited by popgun pete; 05-26-2019 at 12:39 AM. |

Re: Experimenting with wood reels.
My only concern with the reel would be the impact resistance. I don't pay too much attention to my guns when I'm out in the sea. I throw them in the boat and don't know what happens to them when I'm in the water. But it does look really nice!

Re: Experimenting with wood reels.
Thanks guys yeah I agree about impact resistance, I'll have to be careful with it. It's on one of the guns I built earlier this summer which is just oiled mahogany which I also consider a little on the delicate side. The goal is to not beat it up but also not cry when it gets dented or cracked.

Re: Experimenting with wood reels.
The character of the wood would be obscured and it should be strong enough as is, provided that it is not bashed against something that would snap the rim. I have seen old spearguns with timber reels, but they were installed on the shoulder stock type gun with the reel close to the back end of the gun and on one side.

Re: Experimenting with wood reels.
Wow, the air in here is refreshing today.
There's probably a way to do it where you are reinforcing the Reel Structure in a Square Glue Up with Composites and then shaping away much of the wood. Cool work

Re: Experimenting with wood reels.
Yeah I think there's a lot of room to get creative. I might try a few more with different woods and see what I can come up with. It might be cool to do some sort of complex glue up with different materials like you're talking about and see how it looks when it gets shaped.
