Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

Here are a few pics from the prize-giving...all prizes were awarded on a lucky draw basis...so nobody who stayed to the end went away empty handed.

Shane (Notanx) and I have made it home safely. It's a long two days of travel, but I can't wait to get back to settle some "unfinished business" with the local (aquatic) wildlife.

Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

Glad your safe Les and see you soon back down under in Africa.
Also those guys who want, please don't forget to send me a PM about any improvements or needs for next time around. I only received 3 expenditure reports. We are thinking of having 2 or 3 bigger boats avaliable for our more prestigeous guys, next time round, which will be launching from mooring in Simonstown. This will happen on request only.
Thx
AJ

Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

Just a last couple more picture of the prize giving:
Starting with Steward a skipper taking the case of brandy!
Followed by Mark and his Natal team getting 3 tuna guns, one from Freediver, one from Rabitech and one from Rob Allen.
The clubhouse taken just before starting the prize giving event
Followed by some skippers prizes, the skippers also each got cash prizes for donating their time and boats to the tournament even though we never got to sea.
Lastly some more spearo prizes, which were donated by the 3 SA largest suppliers .

Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

got back in yesterday afternoon. i wanted to thank all the divers, skippers and tournament organizers. they truly made me feel at home, which is important when you are half a world away. simonstown is a beautiful place and the cape boat and ski club was awesome. all of us were hearetbroken that we could not get out to the tuna grounds, however their were lots of things to do in the area and lots of shinanigans to get into. id like to thank the great whites for leaving me and les alone while we did our shore dive in false bay, id like to thank the baboons for not mauling me (i just wanted to be accepted), and id like to thank the seal in the harbour for showing some restraint when being harrased by a member of the team. i am looking forward to the trip next year. hopefully we will be able to get on the boats. i will try to post a few pics.

Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

Glad to see the Palm Beach contingency made it home safely. We'll keep our fingers crossed for Wolf. I'm sure there are some fish in South Florida that are not as happy to see you've returned. Great to meet all of you. See ya next year.

Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

For you guys who left early and heard the Aussies and Wolf were staying on to try for tuna after the comp closed...they went out yesterday, about 15 miles I hear, and were hammered by the wind and waves and had to return to port, no diving, no fish. Last I heard they have thrown in the towel and returned home. Zak and I are about 500 kilometres up the coast and waiting for Tommy B to join us tomorrow for some yellowtail spearing up here, but the sea looks pretty dirty with a big swell running at present, so we may even can that idea and continue northwards, where we hear Aliwal Shoal south of Durban currently has 100 foot viz and warm water...

I will be back hunting tuna in Cape Town with Virgili next month, so with luck we will post some pics of BIG fish after that...

Daryl,
Remember, the securing shot comes before the "kill shot" on a BIG one.

Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

Some more pics from the tuna comp...sorry, no fish!

In order of appearance...the awesome weaponry of Deep South Divers team - a Wong hybrid, Chad (Griswold)'s incredible custom carbon fibre machine, and Big Mako's tuna-coloured Sea Sniper.

Some of the boys show off the arsenal...

Tommy Botha, the legend, admires the Sea Sniper.

AJ and Craig,
Please don't forget to send the other teams contact information to the Team Captains. Lots of nice people we'd like to keep in touch with.
