Re: Cape Town Yellowfin Tuna Open Tournament

If any of the international teams are arriving in Cape Town early and would like to try arrange some warm-up dives (in Cape waters, perhaps cool-down is more appropriate) please let me know. I will be in Cape Town from April 28 and will probably get some dives in.

As AJ has already said above, Oatlands Holiday Village is probably the best place to stay during the event at least - most of the other contestants are already booked in there, it is cheap and close to the launching area at the boat club. It is bound to be a centre of activities, apart from the clubhouse itself. There are lots of good eating places and pubs around Simonstown. www.oatlands.co.za

Be advised that Cape Town can get really cold in May if a cold front comes through - last year in May we had some of the coldest weather recorded in 30-odd years. A good water and wind-proof parka is a good idea! On the other hand the weather could be hot and sunny - let's hope for that.

And if you suffer from sea sickness...bring medication...it can be a long and bumpy boat ride to the tuna grounds!

Will not have a chance for "warm-up" diving, unfortunately

Daryl you should contact/speak to Craig and ask him for some contacts on boats, we have organized 2 X Rodmans for media so far and a 28 foot Cobra Cat if needed. Also one of our committee members has a 28foot butt catt. He catches commercially but loves to spearfish also (Wayne Nowers) Maybe you can ask him at comp. He will be sponsoring his boat to take out media/sponsors also. Then of course there will be the 14 boats with skippers to ask if they want to take you guys out again in june.
Lastly if you guys are insane/brave enough, my 19 foot semi-rigit rubber duck called Ysteraas gives a bumpy ride but have landed the present SA yellowfin record. Willi my partner in ysteraas and myself have 40 miles skippers and can maybe help out. Also you should definitely speak to Ryan Nienaber the present SA yellowfin holder. He has a company that buys all the fish from the commercial tuna vessels. Needless to say if you need GPS marks on where the fish is at that moment you need to speak to him. He is also on the yellowfin committee and can be approached in May or I can give you his e-mail address/ cell number. He's very generous with this sort of thing regardless if you know him or not as long as you invite him along once in a while and can even organize Rodmans if needed be! There is also a new charter company called Awesome charters that are still new in the game but has a great 28 foot butt cat and could be approached at maybe a reduced charter cost. Lastly there is of course your expensive charter routes.
Hope this helps
AJ

PS Also we have our 3'rd US team coming in the form of Keith Simmons and his team from the Gulf Coast!
Awesome Keith see you in May!

Thanks AJ, it is actually my fellow IF&SN/Pelaj team member Zak with an 82kg tuna shot off Cape Point last year in May.

And thanks for the update on boats etc for Virgili in June. I'll be in touch.
