Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
For those who have never shot the Big Bang Open tournament or those who have and want a memory jog, here is a thread of practical features.
But, please also check out the prizes and rules: http://www.spearboard.com/forumdisplay.php?f=311 Let's talk about food first. I have locked in the following menu items which are essentially the same as last year. The Moose Lodge does an outstanding job of catering this event with its sizable kitchen. The lodge also has a full service bar and a spacious banquet hall room where we dine and have our event ceremony. Re: Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
We had a delay last year due to problems with the scales. Yesterday, an excellent company in Riviera Beach called Gulfstream Scales started work on servicing, calibrating and certifying the BBO scales.

Re: Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
Both scales will be re-certified this year. I spent two hours yesterday on Sunday reviewing the TV footage shot last year to see exactly what happened so we can avoid a repeat. It is cool to have captured the entire event on camera with good quality sound recording.
Essentially, what the footage revealed was that one scale could not be reset back to pounds and ounces and would only weigh in kilograms. The other scale was not measuring correctly. Special thanks go to our amazing weighmaster Randy Docks who finally figured out after many tries by many people how to switch the one scale back to pounds and ounces so we did not have to use the scale measuring incorrectly. Also, thanks go to Jim Fyfe who was working on mathematical conversions from metric to imperial which we luckily did not have to use. And, thanks to Mike Newman who went out of his way to arrange for bringing in different scales from Lott's Tackle and elsewhere which we also luckily did not have to use. And of course, I thank the patient BBO contestants who stood in line waiting for our team. I appreciate everyone pulling together to solve a big potential problem. This year should go smoother. Tony Here are a few video frames from that problem solved incident. Last edited by SpearMax; 07-06-2015 at 06:45 PM. |

The weigh-in facility is a cool fully shaded outdoor pavilion. Here are a few pics from last year:

Re: Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
A very sweet practical feature of the Big Bang! Open is the venue.
By the way, there will be no Captain’s Meeting for this year’s tournament. Hardly anyone showed up anyway at past BBO Captain's meetings which is fine for our format design. The Tournament shooting will be held for two days starting Friday, July 24, 2015 and ending Saturday, July 25, 2015. The Weigh-in, Awards Ceremony & Expo will be on Sunday, July 26, 2015, at the Moose Lodge at 3600 RCA Blvd. Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33410 Phone (561) 626-4417. This place is located very near the PGA Blvd. Exit of I-95 which is just two exits north of the old venue exit. The google maps link is: https://www.google.com/maps/place/36...921e02a295cde9 We rolled back the start and end times for the weigh-in by half an hour from prior years. The fish weigh-in new hours will be from 10:00AM to 12:00PM Noon Sunday, July 26, 2015. Here are some photos of the wonderful 2015 BBO venue. |

Did I mention the food?
The menu for the BBO luncheon is great. Due to the liquor license of the Moose Lodge, we can not provide unlimited free beer, water or soft drinks. But, there will be some free drink tickets we will pay for and then additional soft drinks and mixed drinks can be purchased at two full service bars there. Food was very good last year and all the staff at Moose was excellent. Great family venue and you won't leave hungry.

As in past years, we will have the Shark scientists collecting cuda and jack donations as well as Lucas Metropulos, President and Founder, of Fishing for Families in Need for food donations.

Captain Billy Black is back again as our Master of Ceremonies and our prize wall is displayed well using professional grid wall fixtures.

Re: Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
Both BBO scales are certified now. I had to purchase a new display head for one of them because it would no longer run on battery. I tested them both at Gulfstream Scales today and they are reading exactly the same.

Re: Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
As part of our advance preparation for the BBO, we double checked the facilities on Sunday for things like power presence at the weighing outdoor pavilion as well as planning the work flow.

Re: Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
One very practical feature of a tournament like BBO is the weigh-in process software. Professionsl software programmer Frank McCallister (aka abdiver) has been helping us for many years. Once in a while Frank shoots the BBO and typically brings in a monster grouper. Thank you so much Frank!

Re: Practical Features of the 2015 Big Bang! Open Tournament
The address of the weigh-in is as follows :
Moose Lodge - Palm Beach Gardens 3600 Rca Blvd. Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 Phone (561) 626-4417 Get off the Turnpike or I95 at PGA Blvd. and drive East. Look for these yellow signs just east of I95 and along the way. But, realize the signs might be removed by property owners or authorities. So, please use mapping software on your smart phone or car GPS. Good luck hunting! Tony |
