Re: cabo in shore report
I speared this big eyed jack out at the regular shore dive spot on Saturday. I spotted a small school of them during the week but I thought they were jack cravalles. After seeing them a couple of more times and realizing they weren't, I decided to spear one. I had no idea what the meat would be like untill I filleted it. It's kinda tuna in color and it cooks up white. Delicious!!!
Shore diving will get ugly. We've had rain for the last two days and should get another day of drenching thanks to tropical storm Patricia. |

Re: cabo in shore report
Steve, great thread/blog... once started, I read the entire thing. You do a great job of giving some sense of living and working in the Baja... tough life. Your spearfishing reports are outstanding, wish I could write as well. I live in Loreto and get out as often as I can, though never enough. Keep on slingin' steel!

I went for a shore dive yesterday and saw nothing. I did, however, see the local oyster diver coming up the same stairs that I was going down. We started talking, exchanging notes, and I eventually mentioned that he should lighten his load by letting me have a few. He was more than happy to share a little of his bounty. He gave me some oysters, a cabo scallop (I think), and a couple of caracols, or snails. I ate them as they are in the pic. I boiled the caracols and the scallop, thinking I might save the shells. I might have over cooked them cause I had to chew it about 9000 times before I could swallow it. Everything came out fine this morning so it was all good. Feels like winter has started. Water temps are in the low 80's. Air temps are ranging from the lo 70's to the mid 80's. Brrrrrr! |

The smaller size roosters fillet up nice. No bloody meat mess. I had mojo de ajo, with a hand full of old bay, and a side of rooster fish. In shore conditions have been nice. Some pretty clear water, in the low eighties. The air temps have been the same, with the lo's getting into the lo 70's |

Re: cabo in shore report
Yup, I cut them out for dog and cat food. There was a thin layer of blood meat just under the skin. If anything the fillets had a slightly,,,, in a good way, gamey flavor.
That same day, I also tried a Mexican Hogfish for the first time. http://www.mexfish.com/fish/mhog/mhog.htm Nice white fillets but not firm, I made some excellent ceviche with it. The hogfish fillets are on the bottom of the plate, rooster's on top. Just wanted to mention that the three fish pictured were taken with a single flopper retro tip, sent to me by Dean, West Coast X, he goes international. |

Re: cabo in shore report
It got a little more wintery today, first gulf wind of the season. On the way to my shore dive this morning, I had to sprint accross the beach, through the 70 degree air temp, in order to escape the chill and find refuge in the 82 degree water temp.
There's been stories of lots of tuna and dorado off shore. Yesterday, the bite was maybe 1 mile off the palmilla point. After my shore dive I went down to palmilla beach to see what they were catching. I always enjoy checking out the scene at the fish tables when the boats are coming in with their catches. I saw more dorado than tuna, and one trigger fish. I've been on a couple of shore dives this weekend and both times the vis was good. A little cloudy close to shore but it would turn to blue the further out I went. The sierra are supposed to be around but I only saw one. Also a big school of small roosters, another big school of even smaller jack crevalles, maybe a 10lb leopard grouper and a few triggers and parrots. I came back with a small Chino Mero and a medium size Gafftopsail Pompano. Last edited by stevencabo; 11-15-2009 at 06:43 PM. |

Re: cabo in shore report
Steven, this thread is awesome! Exactly, to the day a 1 year long fishing report for south Baja.
Reading this has gotten me pumped up for an upcoming family trip to La Paz over Christmas. I just found out this weekend that my cousin by marriage who lives there goes freediving for food something like 3 times per week. I'm gonna try to work that angle with my wife while we're there

Re: cabo in shore report
Thanks Rich. Wish I had a nice fish to show to end this year old thread with but I've only been diving twice in the last couple of weeks. Not much around right now but the viz is really good.
Last Sunday I was at Cerritos beach, about an hour south of La Paz on the Pacific side. I haven't made the hour drive north from cabo in three years. Lot's of changes but the beach scene still seems the same, just with more to look at. It's a fun beach to bodysurf/surf. Whales pass by this area real close to shore this time of year. I've heard stories of good diving in the area also. Air was in the lo 80's, water was in the upper 70's |

Re: cabo in shore report
Sweat reports. You ever dive that rocky pininsula that shelters Cabo San Lucas?

Re: cabo in shore report
I've never dove the end of that peninsula, where the sea of cortez and the pacific meet. Lot's of boat traffic, strong currents, and a sea lion colony.
