Re: The End of California?

"It’s outlandish, urban critics note, for big farm units to be growing alfalfa — which consumes about 20 percent of the state’s irrigation water — or raising cattle, in a place with a third of the rainfall of other states. And by exporting that alfalfa and other thirsty crops overseas, the state is essentially shipping its precious water to China."

Just the alfalfa shipped overseas accounts for about 100 billion gallons of water per year.

Re: The End of California?

None of this would be a problem if some moron hadn't decided to build the biggest population center in ca in a desert then demand that they should be shipped water from the northern half of the state so they can water their golf courses . It asinine to blame the farmers that have been here longer than the vast majority of the houses in SoCal for the water shortage , SoCal should have to find a way to deal with their own water problems , since it shouldn't exist in the first place

Re: The End of California?

Also the fact that we are building a highspeed train instead of deveoping a more comprehensive water plan that could help lessen the effects of the historical drought. This state is driving business and families out by the bus load

Phil, talking in farming terms, you are sowing seeds of revolution like the American colonial settlers did against the Crown of jolly old England. LOL

Next, we'll hear succession talk from the northern California residents wanting to make two states out of one.

Just joking, Tony

Re: The End of California?

That's a great article, even if I don't agree with all of it. IMO a LOT of the economic imbalances that lead to 80% of the available water going to ag yet much of that ag remaining water-inefficient would be solved by just making ag pay a more realistic price for the water they use. I grew up with farmers and they're businessmen like anyone else. When the cost of water goes up they find ways to mitigate those costs. If it's cheap, well, why spend the money to save nothing? But, having said that, I also don't really want to pay $20 per lb for almonds and peaches...

Re: The End of California?

I don't see how this should be such a huge hoopla in our time. Strategically placed solar desalination plants might make water more costly, but whatever. The technology is sufficiently proven and efficient per my humble estimation.

http://cleantechnica.com/2014/02/18/...-salt-problem/

Alternatively, desert cities and counties could outlaw the grass lawn, which is the stupidest and most wasteful appropriation of water no one has mentioned yet. Better yet, why not institute both measures, and cut back on neighborhood noise pollution and fossil fuel use?

I'm seriously scratching my head on this one. We're in this situation as a state because we've got our heads up our asses.

Re: The End of California?

This certainty isn't CA first drought, no matter what the fear mongering climatologists say. This situation was inevitable given the poor governance and lack of preparation. Furthermore, IMO, our current technology could've prevented it if the sociopaths in power wanted it. The advanced countries have the tech to control the weather. Why haven't they helped CA?? I guess their agenda of extracting revenue from the citizens via insane laws is more important than the citizens' well being.
