Re: 2006 FSDA Southern Open Info

I had somebody ask me a question about the Southern Open that others may also have...
Do I need to be a member of an FSDA dive club or member of the FSDA in order to enter?

Answer: No, you do NOT need to be a member of an FSDA dive club but you must be a member of the FSDA.
FSDA dues are 15.00 per year and can be paid when signing up for the tournament.

What is the FSDA?
Answer: The Florida Skin Divers Association (FSDA) is made of a coalition of the best, and most active dive clubs around. The FSDA is one of the largest supporters of divers rights and a supporter of the Ocean Pals program that helps teach our kids about the ocean and its inhabitants.
Member clubs and individuals participate and organize coastal-cleanups, small, member only spearfishing tournaments, the Florida freediving championships that determines which three teams from the FSDA will qualify for the National freediving championships and the Southern Open State championship.

The Southern Open is the FSDA's largest spearfishing tournament that usually has somewhere around 150 participants.
The Southern Open also has a photographers division that starts 1 full week before the one day spearfishing tournament and continues for the whole week right up to the day of the spearfishing championship.
Its a great way to get your wives and kids involved!

The SO used a new scoring format last year that appeared to be wildly popular and quite surprising.
It is a combination of a big fish/aggreagate tourny that many people say really lets the innshore guys do well.
The points system uses a 5 points per fish and 1 point per pound.
Last years event saw many of the top finishers (including freedivers) diving the shallow coastal waters of our Gulf Coast.

See divefsda.com for more info or just ask here

Thumbs up Re: 2006 FSDA Southern Open Info

Dang! Thanks for the support, guys!

All of the net proceeds of the Southern Open are used to protect divers rights.

I was thinking the other day that the FSDA and it's member clubs have run more than 200 tournments over the course of more than 50 years. Pretty good record. Some pretty great people have helped out over the years, and I have been fortunate to know many of them.
