Trajectories of the Earth System in the Anthropocene
PNAS 8-6-18 FROM THE STUDY We explore the risk that self-reinforcing feedbacks could push the Earth System toward a planetary threshold that, if crossed, could prevent stabilization of the climate at intermediate temperature rises and cause continued warming on a “Hothouse Earth” pathway even as human emissions are reduced. Crossing the threshold would lead to a much higher global average temperature than any interglacial in the past 1.2 million years and to sea levels significantly higher than at any time in the Holocene. We examine the evidence that such a threshold might exist and where it might be. If the threshold is crossed, the resulting trajectory would likely cause serious disruptions to ecosystems, society, and economies. Collective human action is required to steer the Earth System away from a potential threshold and stabilize it in a habitable interglacial-like state. Such action entails stewardship of the entire Earth System—biosphere, climate, and societies—and could include decarbonization of the global economy, enhancement of biosphere carbon sinks, behavioral changes, technological innovations, new governance arrangements, and transformed social values. www.pnas.org/content/early/2018/07/31/1810141115 . |

CO2 Levels Reached an 800,000-year High in 2017
Smithsonian 8-7-18 FROM THE ARTICLE Other facts about 2017 show that many of the predictions about climate change from previous decades are coming to pass. Concentrations of other greenhouse gases, in particular methane and nitrous oxide, have reached their highest recorded levels as well. Sea level also set a record and is now three inches higher than it was in 1993. The top 2,300 feet of the ocean reached record high temperatures. Average sea surface temperatures were the second highest recorded, only surpassed by the El Nino year of 2016. The sea-ice in Antarctica was also the lowest recorded in 38 years, covering just 811,000 square miles in March of 2017, and glaciers around the world also shed mass for the 38th consecutive year. According to the report, since 1980 “the loss is equivalent to slicing 22 meters (72 feet) off the top of the average glacier.” https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart...017-180969888/ . |

Why the ocean is cooking off the coast of Southern California
FROM THE ARTICLE "Global warming is really ocean warming," Josh Willis, an oceanographer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in an interview. "The heat being trapped is almost all in the ocean." https://mashable.com/2018/08/10/reco...rn-california/ . |

What the Surging Glaciers of Svalbard Tell Us About the Future of Rising Seas
Smithsonian 8-19-18 FROM THE ARTICLE Glacial melt accounts for about a third of the ongoing sea level rise, but Sevestre notes that the effects of surging glaciers are not considered in current climate change models because the timing and the strength of their surges cannot be predicted. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/scien...eas-180970060/ . |

A rising threat to the internet: water
FROM THE ARTICLE "If the plastic pipes carrying wires underground were to flood, the water could freeze and thaw, damaging or even breaking wires. It could also corrode electronics and interrupt fiber optic signals." https://www.fastcompany.com/90234206...internet-water . |

The very first sentence starts off with a lie. "many of us thought was static". BS. Climate change has ALWAYS been shaping the world.
