Guess the Weight of the Warsaw Grouper Shot the Day of the 2010 St. Pete Open
I am just poking a little fun here, so don't take it too seriously.
Please take the poll above and guess the weight of this warsaw grouper I speared on Saturday, August 21, 2010. First, let me say congratulations to all the winners of the 2010 St. Pete Open! Anyone who comes in second place, third place or any place is not a "loser" in my book. Especially, I congratulate the top-ranked winner Matt Joswig whose black grouper weighed 63 pounds. Nice fish Matt! Matt was the outgoing president of the SPUCs at the time of this year's SPO and a member of the 3 person Tournament Rules Committee. Like some other east coast shooters, I was unhappy that the SPUCs changed the SPO rules at the last minute by disallowing warsaw grouper without telling the public until I called them out on it. Of course, everyone knows they did it for safety reasons. Anyway, enough of that venting, I am over the conflict. Competition motivates me. I think next year I will be hunting monster black groupers in the Gulf of Mexico at 60 feet deep and once again try my best to win the SPO fair and square. That prospect will probably give Howie some nightmares for the next year (just kidding Howie! LOL) Back to the fish picture being polled. I decided to not enter this year's SPO, but went diving anyway as planned. My first dive was a deep wreck where there were no warsaws. My second dive produced this warsaw at a depth of about 180 feet. All diving was done with safety in mind. There were no trimix dives to 300 feet. I played by the rules of the SPO as if I was in the tournament just to see how I might have done.

Re: Guess the Weight of the Warsaw Grouper Shot the Day of the 2010 St. Pete Open
Second, I would like to acknowledge a warsaw grouper that was taken to the weigh-in that was weighed on a certified scale. This beast was shot by Wade Hamlin and weighed 71 pounds. I had no idea he took his fish to the weigh-in and posed in front of the leaderboard until Saturday night when a friend called to tell me. Apparently, Wade created alot of buzz among the onlookers.
I spoke with Wade on the phone Sunday afternoon for the first time. Wade is the nicest of spearos and a good sport who had heard somewhere before he got the weigh-in that warsaw had been banned by the SPUCs over a week prior. He brought the fish in anyway as a "what if" scenario fully realizing it could not win because of the rule change. Here is the story of that team's great day of hunting at this thread: http://www.spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=110852 Congratulations Wade on a super fish!

Once again, I will reiterate that this thread is just for fun.
Please do not take it too seriously. So, how many pounds do you think that warsaw weighs? Please take the poll and if you wish, also enter your best guess specific weight below. I will reveal the weight soon.

THE REAL ST.PETE OPEN WINNER.
when I saw that fish in your cooler that you brought to your hotel room, I was pissed that you weren't allowed to weigh it in. That's the west coasters biggest fear, that an east coast boy will beat them at there tournament. |

The Real St. Pete Open winner???????
A. He didn't enter, without entering, you CAN NOT win... B. Rules said no Warsaws... So Again Can Not win with this... C. I didn't see anyone crying about the new Pelagic category... There are Rules to each tournament, so you PLAN ACCORDINGLY to those rules and you make a plan to win it... An example was the southern open when they made Red Snapper its own category... CHANGE THE PLAN TO WIN THE TOURNAMENT!! Maybe you should of gone after Big Carbos and none of this would have been an issue??? PS, If this is just for fun, Please DON"T erase my Post, or Ban me from the board..... |

If one of my tournaments did the same thing with the rules, I would expect some comments.

Re: Guess the Weight of the Warsaw Grouper Shot the Day of the 2010 St. Pete Open
Matt clearly won under the rules, I am certainly not disputing that. But, I am really happy that I did not arrive at a weigh-in to find the rules had been changed a week prior.
