Thumbs up Tortugas Spearin'

We took advantage of the great weather we have had and made it out near the Tortugas over the weekend. Most of us got some new PB fish and I would have had a world record Red Grouper with a speargun if I would have known to register it.

Nolan got some great photos of the trip and I wrote a full report on my blog at www.SpearBig.com!

Here is a link to the report and some photos!

nice fish, is the world record really 15.7 for red grouper? I shot a 18.45 at last years SPO... if I only knew to register it too...

Surprisingly none, but we did fillet a smaller red that had a few worms. Its weird how some get them and others don't.

Yes, but only because they just separated the speargun and polespear records. Before the record was 19.4lbs with a polespear.

Yes we just went for a day. It was roughly 70-80 miles one way.

Re: Tortugas Spearin'

I think the fish out in the tortugas have a lot let parasites and worms then stuff closer to land. Last trip out, I killed two ajs, one with 2 worms, and the other neither andrewk or myself could find a single worm in. Atl ajs are loaded with them, while the gulfies have less, tortugas fish just seem healthier.

Yeah but the smaller red that we filleted with worms was from the same area in the Tortugas. I do agree they are probably much healthier though.
