Re: Scallops

Josh at Neptonics has them, there's a bunch on ebay, probably more online if you do a search.

what kind of dive knife do you have, and how attached to it are you?

i have taken them off the rocks (with a knife) in the past, but it takes just as long as cutting them out of the shell. i imagine an ab bar would take just as long, but i cannot confirm that. they are literally fused to the rock....

Re: Scallops

If you are in the early stages of your diving experience, I recommend you purchase a float line to attach to your ab iron. You can use the iron to remove the entire scallop if you wish, but more importantly, when you feel you need to refresh your breath, poke your ab iron into the rock shelf next to the scallop and make your accent. This will allow you to return to the same scallop and finish the harvest. The float line can be a bit disconcerting as you feel it against your legs when you fin on the surface or make a decent, but after a bit, you get used to it.
Ab irons are wherever you can find them, on line, on Craigslist, etc.

Scallops do not have a prayer resisting an ab iron.
I do not recommend aluminum ab irons. They bend and the ab laughs at you on your way to the surface.

You are quite right. Knives work well. I found when I used my knife, I left an undesirable quantity of button on the shell. I found the thin blade of the spatula referenced above reduces the chance of leaving 20% in the shell.

Re: Scallops

i believe it. that is actually a really good idea, i would just be a little cautious about the regs precluding such a device...

Quote:
29.60. ROCK SCALLOPS.
(a) Limit: Ten.
(b) Methods of take: Rock scallops may be taken only by hand, by the use of dive knives, or
by devices commonly known as abalone irons in compliance with provisions of Section 29.15(e)
of these regulations.

Again, quite right. I forgot to mention, I carry a knife, making it difficult to prove noncompliance. There are no regulations limiting the manner in which one cleans their whole scallops when in the water (or on the boat) making it difficult to make the argument that I violated the regs.

Re: Scallops

Yes. But did you hear how he said that he left some meat on the shell when using a stiff kniff blade, that is avoided when using the thin, flexible spatula.
I do what he did on that board on my way to the surface.
