Odd Critter ID ?
Yesterday I was out in about 70 ft. when two large animals went swimming by.
They were surely mammals because of the horizontal tail .. I have seen loads of Dolphins from all over the country, but these things didn't look or act like Dolphins.... For one, they were white , yes white , all white over there sides and back. couldn't see the bellies.... stayed a few ft. under the surface , parallel with the surface, never seen them come up for air , but i'm sure they did at some point.. (4&5ft er's out there) Anybody gots an idea ?? maybe small Pilot Whale ?

Re: Odd Critter ID ?
It sounds like a spotted dolphin to me. Some of them can be very light on their backs and sides and would fit the size you're describing. A pilot whale calf is going to be darker, and at that size will likely still be with its mother.
Also, there was an albino bottlenose seen in the Indian river lagoon a few years ago so those genes are out there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Odd Critter ID ?
could of been I suppose ,, they just didn't act like any Dolphin I ever seen ..
the way they cruised by at the same even depth. Could be another mystery of the sea ,,, or I could be NUTS ! But I do know it wasn't alcohol induced ,, had no rum on the boat ! Thanks gator

Re: Odd Critter ID ?
If they were white they could have been Beluga Whales.

Re: Odd Critter ID ?
Wow ,, if i was a betting man I'd throw a few bucks on that one .. But like you say that is highly unlikely .. After looking at a few more pics of them , I realized that I didn't see a dorsal fin on them. So ???
I remember a few years ago I saw a Turtle out there that looked different then the others,, but i didn't think much of it at the time... A few days later it hit the local new of a turtle being spotted near Naples ,, a type not from around here. As I recall a Leatherback or something .. And !!! when a teenager I spotted a Pink Flamingo near my home on the Susquehanna River in Pa. My biology teacher all but called me a lyre.... Sure was great when he had to Apologize to me! Cheer's

Re: Odd Critter ID ?
2 years ago out of Cedar Key we had some Dolphins cruising along side. Two of them were juveniles and looked solid white. A biologist from UF said that its not too uncommon for them to be white or very light from birth. Some get darker with age.
Any chance they could have been cobia? I have seen some 4-5' dominantly white but not solid. |
