For a little under $225 you can get exactly what you are looking for with a MAKO Predator and Pro Series Reel - free shipping and no tax.

Great to hear you are introducing your daughter to the sport! BTW, we custom tie our bands and we can cut them a little longer for a young hunter, if you prefer - for no extra charge - off course.

Wishing everyone a safe and prosperous New Year!

Thanks

A handspear may be best at that age as it teaches the youngster to wait for the moment to strike and observe fish habits to see how they move and their tendency to stop and turn as they go about their searching and feeding. Understanding fish habits is the best pathway to shooting them. Kids don't have the awareness of what might happen next with a gun, which can lead to bad situations. The same applies to some teenagers, they just don't think ahead and are dumbfounded when something unexpected happens.

Thanks for the insight Pete, and Iím fully aware about gun awareness at young age.

To give you a bit of background, Iíve started Spearfishing when I was 8. Iíve been Spearfishing since. Or nearly 30 years of my life. I intend on teaching my child both freediving and spearfishing safety and once sheís a bit older, get her into a course.

When I started spearfishing something like this was all a kid would be entrusted with, although I used a telescopic unit of chrome plated brass and stainless steel tubing for the retractable section.
https://www.makospearguns.com/Travel...ear-p/mtps.htm

In some countries, unless directly supervised, spearfishing is only permitted at ages of 14 and 16 years depending on the country. Irreversible damage is something kids don't understand, like losing an eye or a finger, as in cartoons, etc. everyone is back to new in the next scene.

P.S. you could add something like this to hold the stretched band.

Re: WTB small euro-style speargun, 50-70cm

I just took delivery of a titanium three section polespear/handspear from Keltvic in Russia. It is very well made and surprisingly light, although a heavy polespear has more punch if you are shooting something big. The polespear is supplied with two bands, a grey and a black one, the grey one being fitted. The tip thread used is a 7 mm metric thread and the titanium pole diameter is 14 mm. The three 70 cm sections give you a spear that is slightly over 2.1 meters long, that is without a tip. With just two sections it should be good for kids to use when poking around, plus the sliding friction trigger handle allows them to hold a cocked band. Experienced users usually cock the band immediately before striking, but kids donít have that strength or the ability to hold a prolonged loaded grip so the sliding handle for them is a benefit. Otherwise one simply needs a centre flange to hang onto to prevent your hands slipping, especially if your gloves are slimy from handling previous victims.

I did not include the tip extension as it will be equipped with multi-prong tips (no escapees).

I gave my younger son his first speargun at the age of 9. It was a 70 cm Rob Allen with custom 12mm bands.
He got a wahoo with that gun when he was 12. Now, he outfishes me often... 😆

This is Alessandro now at 17.

Thatís awesome Marco! This is what life is about!

We were over a 40ft wreck last summer, and to our surprise, a cobia came by , shouted at my wife to throw us a speargun, and we pnly had a 90cm omer then, but my daughter shot it (I loaded the 90cm reef gun for her). It was her first fish ever, a good 25pounds (13kg) cobia!! Sheís been hooked into the speArfishing since then! We intent on exploring reefs together next season !

Re: WTB small euro-style speargun, 50-70cm

Very cool to read these stories. I canít wait to take my son and daughter out once they are a bit older.
I have a 50cm beuchat that I am keeping for them but probably would have them start with a pole spear for some of the above mentioned reasons.
It has the added benefit that they will learn to approach fish so much better because of the limited range.
