March: Chasing after Halibut chasing after Grunion
...Catch a weather envelope and you may find some decent size halibut feeding up shallow on grunion. March 9th-12th and 24th-27th should have grunion coming in to spawn. If you only have weekends to dive, Sunday the 8th is a possible, as the grunion gather out in deeper water, getting ready to go ashore once the scouts give the signal all is clear. Early on, the flatties gather under the congregating grunion and shoot up off the bottom to pick off an easy meal.
...Strong current on the 9th possible but, it could bring in clear water for better vis. I like the 3rd or 4th day to hunt at early dawn, as the flatties are often lying out in the open, fat, lazy and happy, all stuffed with bait. Once the sun hits the water, they bury to avoid predators....In the past week, the larger halibut have been caught out in 80' to 120' depths. That will change to in shallow, anytime.. ...KEY: Try to dive beach areas that are poorly lit at night...grunion avoid areas with bright lights and lots of activity. Again, it is, "Find the grocery store and you will find the gamefish". Last edited by Bob Ballew; 03-08-2020 at 03:11 PM. |
